Tog or rockland?

Ok so here it is, now that theres snow UP there we are thinking going up on wed -sun. Problem is I also have res. for tog on the 8th (sun) I'm still gettin mixed reviews about tog on snowest, some say they need way more in the back country, guides however claim "it's fine".
My point I guess is If the backcountry is claiming victim's on a daily basis then we are stuck to trail riding, which we could do UP there. I'm ready to reschedule, cause I want the tog experience to be "Magical". Plus rockland is about 700 miles closer for us. Looking for tog veterans for feedback. So how 'bout it, polaris rider, skylar, J.D., and anyone else I can't remember.

Lookin4snow myself and 2 others just got back from TOGWOTEE... Check out a few pics in the Western Forum, TOGWOTEE SNOW thread.
I am the one on a blue/white Summit holding out a double "thumbs up". Hiding inside my helmet is an ear to ear smile !! I still can't believe we almost talked ourselves out of going !

Not enough snow to go deep in the bush in the Yoop. Lots of timber to tear things up and of course the Rock in Rockland means 1 thing... Tog for sure!

We ( my two boys and myself where supposed to be standing on the Continental Divide right now but we canceled due to lack of snow and the Avy conditions seem to be getting worse, so we came UP to Houghton instead, as someone said earlier not enough base to bury all the landmines ( one new right front ARM today) but some good fluff to play in none the less. Our trip was planned for CO ( less snow then Tog currently) I saw to WEST….

With the recent snow I would say head to the UP. Conditions right around Rockland might not be the greatest but the further north you go the better it is (assuming you know where to go). You could always trailer to Parkview or The Mosquito and ride from there but I think you'll be fine. I was up last week and had fun in the woods before they got all the new snow. I would say use some common sense and avoid lumps in the snow and you should be fine. The extra money, time, and hassles of going west kept us in the UP last week and they didn't have as much snow as they do now. JD's 5-10 day forecast says 8-12 inches with no warm ups predicted. I'm really starting to think I'll only go west in March and April from now on.

I bet they don't have yummy strudels out west. Now doesn't that make your mouth water.
I just couldn't let that thought slide by. LOL

Is this a trick question??? Togwotee. 1000 good days in UP still doesn't equal a fair day at Tog. No comparison. Go west.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I will take the 1000 good days in the yoop over a fair day in Tog ANYTIME. Silliest comment I have read in a long time. LOL.

rmk4ever, tough choice to make, how much are you going to lose by cancelling Tog? Have to take that into consideration too.

As far as the

Skylar,

From what I understand we have 72 hrs with the "full winter pkg" to keep 95% of our deposit. Plus I'm sure we will reschedule & hope for better cond. (wow what a diff a yr makes last yr record snows now drought) The other guy I'm going with starts a welding class for jan & 2 weeks in feb. So it would not be til atleast v-day & already know that date wont fly with the wifey. I've been looking forward for this since aug. made the res in sept.
What to do? what to do? Carter thread been dead for a while. I'll only be able to do this trip once this yr.
Still on the fence.

I've lived and ridden the northern Wisconsin/UP Michigan thing for 10 years before moving out west to Victor, ID 4 years ago. We live about 75 miles from Togwotee on the west side of the Teton range, so I can't speak for Tog yet this year (I am riding the in early Feb). Were I live the snow was marginal for the first 3 1/2 weeks of December. Having said that it was better than anything I ever saw in wisconsin and would have been considered good for the UP. Everything is relative. We got about 3 feet in the mountains during two storms over Christmas week, which means two things. There is a lot of snow in the mountains now (I rode on Sunday on the west slope of tetons and was in waste deep heavy powder all day) and the avalanche conditions are very dangerous --- heavy, moisture laden snow on top of a frost hoar snow layer at the bottom.

So, IMO snow depths are good right now (not great), but snow pack safety is concerning. Care and avi-knowledge are advised.
