My friend and I had about $2000 in gear stolen from our hotel room in Houghton last weekend.
We are out:
HMK Backpack black/white/grey snow cammo
True Adventure Gear Backpack black/white/grey snow cammo
2 BCA shovels
2 Sven saws
1 Garmin Rino 530hcx
1 Cannon 130 sx digital camera
First aid kits
survival kits
klim midlayer
under armor base layer
green/grey duffel bag
Spot 2 sattellite messenger
509 sinister goggles
klim gloves
cabelas pinnacle gloves
klim balaclave
gerber knife
gerber multi tool
klim socks
battery/cell phone/gps charger and rechargable batteries
jeans/shirts/socks/underwear
etc.

Anyone who is going to be in the area in the coming weeks please keep an eye out. From talking to the local pawn shop, items like this are commonly sold for cash in the bars around the area. I have been watching craigslist, and ebay with no luck. I also have the local pawn shop on lookout for any of the items.

The items were taken from our hotel room while I was sleeping inside. Pretty ballsy IMO. It sure put a downer on our season having to shell out almost 2k to replace the gear we have spent years (and a lot of time and money) putting together.

At this point, I am not going to name the exact hotel as I am waiting to hear from the property owner as to how they would like to handle the issue, as the hotel room door's lock was not functioning properly.

The amazing part is what they DIDN'T take. The left my wallet, laptop, another Garmin rino 530 gps, camera, klim helmet, boots, bibs/jackets.

The high dollar items they got, the didn't even know when they took the bags. The GPS, camera, and spot they got away with were hidden inside the bags they stole.

I have always been a very trusting person, and have never really worried about theft in the past, but this was sure an eye opener.

The dollar value of the stolen goods classifies it as felony larceny. Its too bad the spot satellite tracker was not turned on to the tracking mode. It would have lead us right too them. On a positive note, the Houghton Police officer has been very helpful with the situation.

My friend I was up there with stayed behind at the bar for an hour or so, so the chain was not an option unfortunately. In the future I will definitely increase my diligence.

I was thinking the same thing. Someone had to purposely break the lock or know it wasn't functioning properly to do this. I still can't believe they did it while you were sleeping. Are you sure it happened between the time you came back and when you're friend came back? If the lock wasn't functioning it could have happened while you were both out.

Back in College I worked at a hotel for a few years...and this don't surprise me one bit. The hotel should have insurance to cover unless a small mom and pop shop that can't afford the extra insurance...also might be able to run it thru your auto insurance since you were on a trip. No matter how secure you think you are there are people that can get in these rooms faster then snot...with or without a good door lock...and even chain...could be an inside Job but would have to say probably someone just watchen you and all your stuff....but you can do a background.criminal check on the people that work there. Just get ahold of the local court (but you would need there names). A criminal check may not get your stuff back but if all of a sudden you find out the night clerk has a record of break ins or the such might just scare the hotel owner enough to make it right for ya...

sorry to hear about your loss, what a way to ruin a good trip. I am not a techy type of person but wont the "Spot 2 Satellite tracker" eventually have to be turned on to see if it works? I would assume you could have the tracker "watched" so when it does come on at least you have an idea of where it is at. Again, I don't know anything about them but maybe worth a shot. Good luck.

This is crazy! Never heard of a hotel room getting robbed while someone was IN the room! Might have to consider bringing one of those door stoppers with for some extra security. Sorry about the loss.

I was sleeping in the room when it happened as well. Crazy stuff.

sorry to hear about your situation.......but I have to ask are you a really heavy sleeper, was it a two room hotel, or what? I understand everyone is different but I wake up to the slightest sound when I am on the road, I actually tried ear plugs once but that just didn't work.

good luck

You have to wonder if this person, or persons were brazen enough to steal your stuff while you were in the room sleeping, what they were prepared to do if you woke up and caught them. In the past, Ive never been overly careful to chain motel doors while sleeping, but I certainly will now. Thieves are lower then low.
