Riding after broken ribs

I broke a couple ribs water skiing (jumping), no lung damage but did tear the cartilage between the ribs. I was back skiing 6 weeks later with a great deal of pain, wasn't allowed to jump again for ~ 4-5 months.

My best guess is Christmas time he may be OK but if the ribs aren't healed you are in dangerous territory. Tekvest is probably a must.

Glad to hear he is OK, sounds like he got really beat up.

Not to turn this thread into a different direction but yesterday I went to clean the car out and I took a few photos. I had 6 people tell me he was lucky to be alive. Thing was, he didn't have his seat belt on and they all say that saved him. He was thrown out of the drivers seat before his legs could be crushed and across to the passenger side where the EMT's could get him out easily. Here are a couple of the photos.

This one shows how the door pushed up right against the transfer case.

He actually came out of his shoes. We couldn't find his shoes anyplace so when I went to the car I found them pinned between the door and transfer case right in front of the peddles. They were in there so tight I almost couldn't pry them out. They were still tied so I have no idea how he came out of them.

Makes me realize one shortened riding season is a small price to pay for a lifetime of riding still ahead of him.

Looking at those pictures, he is lucky! I'd still get in the habit of wearing a seat belt though.

Had a similar car accident when I was 15, some knucklehead tried passing us from 5 cars back while we were slowing down to turn left. T boned us right in the drivers side door, one of the worst places to get hit. Im half blind in my left eye from the accident but no other major injuries. In the end, I was a lucky guy.
Glad to hear he is going to be OK, pics brought back a lot of scary memories. Hope he heals up nicely!

Scary pictures. Did he get t-boned by someone?

He did. His fault. He was second car in line at a red light, car in front of him turned right on red and he wasn't thinking and started right out going straight into the intersection. He can't remember anything so I figure he either was day dreaming and just reacted to the car in front of him moving, or was day dreaming and treated the red light like a stop sign. Either way he went through the light. The car that hit him was going about 50.

Of course one of my first thoughts was "was he texting" so when I got his phone from the wreck first thing I did was go back and look at the last activity on it and he had sent a text about 5 minutes before the wreck telling someone he was just leaving the house which is just over a mile from the scene. So at least that wasn't the issue but still.... his fault.

I'm just glad he's ok! Could have been so much worse. Like you said, he may miss some riding this year, but he will ride again. :)

Probly no set limit to healing. In general the younger you are the faster you heal. Mine only hurt when breathing heavy or straining but i didnt have internal injuries. The pain the longer you have it kinda get used to it. A Mc david waist trimmer make a good wrap and keeps everything snug so you dont get the stretches. should help a lot when you first get back on a sled because your proly going to go before your really ready. Wouldnt be good to wear it all the time though even though it feels good

He came home from the hospital today. Nurse said he was healing fast and within 2-3 weeks may not feel much pain in everyday activity. She said may be able to ride in 2 months but "don't bust any big powder drifts and go over the handle bars" Don't know if she's seen her fair share of accident's or she's a rider.

Been there.....5-6 weeks he should be doing well enough I would think. It smarts for a while, that's for sure, the first couple weeks will be the worst by far. Hopefully all the other injuries heal up as fast.

Glad he is ok Gary!

Back in Feb 2004 is when i had my accident on my sled, I never did go to a doctor, but i am pretty sure i had at least one broken rib. I ended up buying another sled the same afternoon, and finished out riding that trip, it hurt like ****, but, winter is short. LOL.

No broken ribs but open heart surgery the first part of August, now I can pull start my 800 Switchback. I should be ready to roll when the snow flies.

Iowarider, my husband just had open heart surgery on Friday Oct. 24th. His first question when the surgeon came in the next day was "Will I be able to ride snowmobile this season?" He patted him on the shoulder and said maybe but you got more things to worry about right now then that. He said maybe January. He is doing very well and I just recently picked up a new Vector with power steering.
I told him he can ride mine and I will ride his. I kid him telling him he is just trying to comandeer my new sled. You are 3 months along. How long until you started feeling more like your old self?

About a month ago. I got a late start on rehab and should be done next week. Treadmill and airdyne bike is what I have been doing plus walking. It is surprising you feel after a few weeks go buy.

Thanks Iowarider. That's good to hear. He seems to be doing really well so far. Have to go back and see the surgeon tomorrow morning and will find out more then. He is down to 1 pain pill a day already and looking to try and go a whole day tomorrow. We will see. Take care and best of luck to you.
