Gonna spend a couple nights in downtown Detroit in a couple of weeks. Does anybody know:
-A good blues/jazz bar
-A good brewery/tasting room
-A good place for craft whiskey
-A good place for sushi

Thanks!

Stay as far away as possible from Detroit. Just kidding. However, if ya want to see the worst, go down on Chrysler! I used to truck into there, and it's bad place! The next thing to the combat zone.

I thought this was a rigged question when I read it but I was there for business once too, flew in for 36 hours and flew out. It was the "Northwest Airlines" hub back in the day, anyway be very careful. Don't get too loaded or you'll get unloaded.

Downtown Detroit is on the verge of being a nice place again. The entire area downtown is literally being gutted. All new hotels, condos, retail and arenas. Definitely on the rebound thanks to a couple local billionaires.

You guys have old opinions...Detroit is enjoying a renaissance downtown and in Corkville. I was there in the 90s, I understand the despair the city was going through.

This is a serious post, gonna check it out before heading to Canada, wondering if any locals have any tips.

That was 35 years ago when I was trucking into downtown dirty side of Detroit. It wasn't if you were going to get robbed, but when. If you lived through it, you were very fortunate! Seen trucks shot full of holes, and the shooters didn't even know if there was anything of any value in it. Sounds like a whole different game there now. And that is a real good deal! But, always be very careful!

I didn’t recognize Windsor totally changed. I walked around downtown Detroit for trade shows for a good week didn’t have any problems at all. I’m sure there are bad sections like any city but downtown was fine for me.

I would love to help answer your questions as I live on the outskirts, but unfortunately none of those are places I have any knowledge of. What Highflyer says is true, though! If you don't have any luck here, you may want to try posting your questions in the Michigan section of HCS. Good luck and enjoy your visit!

don't want to hijack the thread but they ever finish building the "new" jail? I don't know many details but they started building a new (3 ish years ago) jail right down town (walking distance to Ford Field) but then what I heard is the citizen started protesting so the project got put on hold (after the actual building started going up).

Born and raised in/around Detroit, its still the same city its always been and always will be because that how the Detroiters want it, yeah they "cleaned up" downtown and Belle Isle is in excellent shape now that the MI DNR runs it, but it still good ole Deeetroit to me. Places guys like us belong and places we don't, greek town is still good for dinners, Mexican town still good and cork town is mostly renovated to attract the hipsters. If you want whiskey and homemade beer and such, head to corktown, Michigan ave and Bagley area. The "new jail" comment made me laugh, they haven't touched that in years, city went bankrupt and the excellent ex-mayor went to prison.

Forget downtown. Catch a cab at your doorstep and ask the driver. Wayne State / Cass corridor area is a start and close by for jazz, brew and whiskey. Flash some cash and he may be your personal driver for the night. It would be worth it.

Well, made the big road trip, had one night in Detroit. It is indeed different downtown. People are out and about, new places opening up. Big issue is that hotel construction has not kept up with the resurgence, so hard to get a room. Marriott RenCen was over $400 a night. Lots of building going on. We only stayed one night in Corktown at a hipster hotel. Good place, good neighborhood.
Went to the Dearborn Assembly plant, Henry Ford Museum, and Detroit Institute of Arts. All very worth it.
Total trip was 3900 miles not including flying to Florida in the middle of it. Had a great time for the 2 1/2 weeks.

I thought for sure they were coming to your place? With you being so close, friendly, you know? Hey, just a little fun, eh, no harm intended! LMAO!

Had to chuckle about MKE getting chosen (fyi, I live in Green Bay and have paid my dues in MKE too) as within hours my phone was buzzing like crazy (amber alert) about a fella that stole his 2 year old and murdered his girlfriend in Milwaukee. Update a few days later, he murdered the kid too.
Funny how these things get press now that MKE is in the spotlight.
The day before, MKE murders didn't even get to the paper.
