Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally called "Decoration Day," it is a time to mourn and honor the sacrifices made by service members. The day is observed on the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day's origins can be traced back to the aftermath of the American Civil War, when communities began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers.

Veterans Day

11th day of November

Very few know about the Fridays. but it is growing. I believe it was started a few years ago by a district of the American Legion Riders here is Wisconsin.

For our local veterans, Camp American Legion, Harshaw, WI will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on June 14th with lots of festivities.

I'm sure I've posted this before but I think it drives home the meaning of Memorial Day. On Feb. 11th, 1970 my friend and high school classmate, Marlin Peterson, was killed in Vietnam, just a little over two weeks before his 21st birthday. The battle that day was described as "The Day it was Raining Dead."

We must never forget. Rest in Peace, Marlin.
