Trails once again took a beating this weekend with heavy traffic.....the clubs are doing a great job keeping things smoothed out...but there is some snirt starting to appear, on the road crossings and railroad grades...there is still some ice in the corners, but with the warmer weather the trails are starting to loosen up a bit..snow is softer, and it is warm....I guess we'll see how they hold up this week with warmer weather...it's supposed to start raining here shortly, then change to a wintry mix over night with some light snow accumulations....but thats really all that is in the forecast, for the next 7 days....we simply need more snow. Lake Nokomis is dangerous off trail right now....they are dropping the water which is creating ice heaves, and holes...stick close to the barrels and markers and you will be fine...there is 22 plus inches of ice in spots...but again...don't go to far off the beaten path, lots of dangerous heaves that will send you flying, and they are very hard to see in day light....know where you are going and be careful out there...also fish trap hill is icy...use the trail that goes around if you aren't studded....or you'll go backwards, and it's a pretty steep hill.
This warm weather and lack of snow in the forecast has me nervous...trails are decent right now...but we'll see how they are come Friday

I'm not seeing 50's in any weather app for northern Wisconsin....some low to mid 40s ...but not 50s up here...and by the end of next week seeing temps back to the low 30s with Snow chances

Couple things, If the sun doesn't spend too much time out during those 40 degree days the Northwoods should survive. I see Friday through Sunday as the warmest days by me in MW with low 40's. I'm sure the trails will stay open and if it's heavy traffic they could get beat up. There is a lot of snow that the groomers can pull onto the trails to make them nice once it cools down again. Looks like a weather system coming on Wednesday/Thursday of next week.

Traffic will be the key word....people are going to ride no matter what....heavy traffic with warm temps will kill it fast...it would be nice to tell people to hold off on riding to save the base, but we know that's never going to happen....so I guess we'll see....we don't have the amount of snow here as they have up north...there isn't alot of snow left pull in from the sides.....something to think about...we are below average snowfall wise in north central Wisconsin, if the season ended tomorrow we'd be nearly 25 inches below average...the only thing saving us is that we had good ice before Xmas, and we got freezing rain, which solidified our base....we've really been riding on one big Snow from January, and a couple inches here and there....the ice base is saving us this year, or we'd be toast already....I guess we'll see where we are at next week. I will say this...if we don't get more wet, heavy snow soon.....we could be DONE in a hurry....the base will not last with heavy traffic and warm temps

Forest Rider's President said this

"I am hoping many of you will see this report and refrain from riding until conditions change and winter returns. The trails have been great so far, and we would love for the season to continue, but we cannot change the weather. Please be safe!"
Jerry

Let me just say...for him to come out and say that... takes HUGE balls on his part, as his club has business members that are notoriously nasty.....they have threatened to beat people for proposing to close trails to preserve the base (or not open due to safety issues).....so I give him credit for being honest, and trying to preserve our northwoods base, so if we get a bit more snow we can hopefully ride until April

btw...it was 3 below zero this morning, and as of last night, and this morning trails are outstanding...smooth, flat, awesome....Even with the expected warm weather I think they will hold up well through Saturday morning depending on traffic...it's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday that I'm worried about...hopefully people will use common sense and NOT ride when it's that warm
