    Last year vs This year

March 31, 2023 Looks like snow, was more ice than anything. I could have gotten similar pictures 2013 and 2014. I don't think 2024 will look quite the same.

Really good weather news released today....regarding next WINTER

https://ggweather.com/enso/oni.htm Here is my source for the chart. You can go back to 1950 in tables to try and correlate to good/bad winters. The hard part about correlating snowfall at least to the El Nino/La Nina, is that you have to look at monthly snowfall values. El Ninos tend to...

Really good weather news released today....regarding next WINTER

I wish it were so easy as El Nino bad La Nina good. Here is the chart going back to 1990. My intuition is that the best scenario for predicting a good upper midwest winter is a weak la nina with a warm dry fall that stretches into November, then a hard flip mid month to cold and snowy.

Really good weather news released today....regarding next WINTER

Strong El Nino equals terrible winter for upper Midwest. La Ninas on the other hand are more of a crapshoot, some good years and some terrible ones. There is some history of strong La Ninas being as bad as strong el ninos for the midwest. Unlike the west. Out west there are some pretty good...

What trip(s) have you cancelled so far?

So, the weather guys pretty much assign El Nino/La Nina based on an index (think averaging of measurements over a large area to get a single number) There is weak/moderate/strong index values of each El Nino and La Nina and also neutral where the index is near 0. Strong El Nino conditions...

What trip(s) have you cancelled so far?

Don't get me started on that term... Funny thing is that Polar Vortex didn't drop down south until early January. I felt like that kid in the back of class trying to get attention of the teacher explaining to people down south how the "Arctic" Air had been feeding into ND/N MN/N WI/UP since...

What trip(s) have you cancelled so far?

Think back to the winter of 2013-14. In general that winter featured a massive ridge in the jet stream going over Alaska and diving straight down into the eastern 2/3 of the Canada/US. That winter was one of the coldest and snowiest in memory for the northern plains/midwest, leaving Alaska...

    And the Temperature Is.....

Yeah, it became apparent about 4-5 days ago on weather models that this chunk of cold air over the midwest was going to lose its connection to arctic air and slowly wither and wash away.

What trip(s) have you cancelled so far?

For simplicity, there are basically 3 weather models that run 4 times a day and go out 14+ days. The GFS (American), European, and Canadian. There are more than that but those are the main ones and many websites that show them. All the data is the same, with different graphical interfaces...

So.......I started a project, My new Garage!

That video is definitely way more extreme of a case than your situation. But, I don't know if even a whole bunch lag screws between top plates and gable truss will ever eliminate the hinge effect, there is just to much flex in lumber without some sort of bracing. Spanning the exterior...

So.......I started a project, My new Garage!

I am no engineer or carpenter. It's kinda randomly something I saw on the web about mixing those two types of trusses. Then a few weeks ago I saw this on you tube... (go to 13 min mark) and when I saw your pics here it made me a bit worried for your project.

So.......I started a project, My new Garage!

So, where did you order your trusses? Having scissor trusses with flat bottom gable end trusses is something that needs extra consideration. Without additional bracing you have a massive hinge point in your gable end walls. Hopefully the truss company can point you in the right direction for...

    weather changes fast anymore

When I was a kid, 5 years old about... On a warm August morning my dad brought my sister and I on a walk down our dead end road through woods that opens up to a long narrow field. You couldn't see the field until you got right to it and the idea was to be quite and hopefully sneak up on any...

    December 1, 1985

You must have the year wrong. Bears famously lost only one game in the 85 season...to the Miami dolphins, the only team that has had an undefeated season. Thank you ESPN 30for30

    California's new law

I hear the Mr Fusion reactor can make over 1.21 gigawatts from a few banana peels and half a can of beer, and its been around since at least 2015!

To all that snow checked a new Pol.

I am 60 miles east of Roseau. Polaris runs employment ads in the local paper every week for as long as I can remember. Here is their ad from last weeks paper. Its small but readable. Walk in off the street with no experience and start at $17.14/hour. Not saying that is great or terrible...

    Minnesota snow

How far did you get towards Waskish before getting turned around/lost, just out of curiosity? Before the snow last Sunday-Monday there was only 3-4 inches of snow on the ground north of Waskish. All the previous storms seemed to cutoff right at the county line. Here is the latest MN DNR snow...

Minnesota Trip - Duluth / Lake Vermilion / Grand Portage Advice Needed

Glad I was able to help you out planning your trip. Here is a pic of the dnr interactive snowmobile trail map. A lot of the local trail maps I have seen for the same areas really generalize the paths not fully showing all the twists and turns. The mn arrrowhead has very few straight trail...

Northern MN Flatlanding 03.16.2019, a Video Collection

Definitely would not want to run those creeks with powder snow. But these are from last month on the power line and a forest road, the powder was incredible by this area's standards in February. Didn't dare stop unless you were on an old track.
