03 rev 800 very thirsty!! Help!!

My buddy picked up an 03 rev 800. It seems to be overly thirsty in the gas department. Has anyone had a problem with this machine. It also backfires when shut off.

I know i read a thread about this a while back but cannot find it. Any help would be appreciated.

buddy i ride with needs to stop for fuel every 80 - 90 miles

Most of the 800's of that era got about 9-10 mpg if you ride moderately to hard. I would never run past about 90 miles on my '03 800. As far as the backfire, shut it off, count to about 8 and BOOM, there it is! They all do that. It helped to let it idle for a few seconds before shut down.

my pops has an 03 800 and everything you discribed is what he had gotten every year since new! we get the big bang and 100 miles to tank usually. We usuallly imitate shootin one another with the exhaust bang, noticed it usually happened when we rode harder.
