03 Yamaha Viper SX Mtn. gas mileage

mmm power

I have SLP Triple Pipes, Vforce 3 reeds, on my 03 Viper Mtn. 600 miles on a rebuilt engine. I get about 5-6 MPG. What do I need to improve mileage? What are others with this sled getting for mileage?

Ride slower. Lean out the mixture, best way is to monitor with a EGT, plug color and seat of the pants.
I have been playing with an 08 TNT, trying to fix the lean mid-range. I played with needle tapers last year. turned them down a couple thousands in diam in the lower third if the needle and went from 16 mpg to 5 with just that change. Sled ran real bad too. This year I want with needles from a 07 500ss, larger pilot, and main. My mileage went from 16 to 10, the temps were a little cooler, but the milage was unacceptable. The sled ran great too. I am now back to all stock, getting 15-16(20 mpg if I ride with kids at 40 mph)sled runs fine. I just watch the EGT and stay away from the hot spots.

Sorry to ramble, just giving an example. The pipes and reeds require more fuel, so on a sled that would get about 10 mpg stock(as most of the sleds from those years did) any mods will drop that number. Ahh, the price of HP!

Remeber the old saying, noise = power (maybe that only applys to Harleys)

I can't help you on details to get better mpg but I can tell you that my stock SRX w/similar motor (700) consistently gets ~12 to 14 mpg depending on trail conditions/temperature/strength of thumb... I would think that you should be getting close to that.
