06 500ss just died on me

Last night we were getting dumped on so my cousin and I went riding. We rode for about 25 miles and we got in a straight away and decided to open them up. We were running 75-80mph for 1-2 miles and right before we were going to get back on the trail my sled dies. The speedo was stopped at 60mph and the tach was stuck at 4000 rpm. I lifted the hood and the Y pipe was blazing orange. We tried to start it again and nothing. So we took the belt off and he towed me back to my house about 5 miles away. We get home and I knock ice and snow dust off the front and thought I'd try to start it. It fired right up. I put the belt back on and drove it around the yard and seemed to run fine.

Is there any explantion for this? If they start to overheat do they just shut off? I followed the entire night with blowing snow and snow dust off my cousins machine. I did knock off some ice in the vent in front of my exhaust. Would that have caused it to overheat with not getting enough air to it? Is there anything I should be concerned with? Please give me your advice. Thanks!

Normally when they overheat, the beeper will sound letting you know it is getting hot, you may not have seen or heard it. The sled will either shut down or go into limp mode.
That is if your lucky....
Now the really good news, you probably burned it down, got it hot, stuck a piston, let it cool for a few minutes and then it would pull over. Towed it home, really cooled off, now it will start, might even run ok, for a while. I would do a compression test to see if any damage was done. Hopefully not. Those are cast iron bores in that machine, so if you toasted it, you can re-build with oversize pistons if needed.
Sustained throttle runs for that long in powdery snow, not a good idea.

500ss

I agree with the above. My new 2008 500SS shut off after 54 miles on sled. It was very hot also. Let it cool, and rode 50 miles back to cabin with no problems. Next trip (1 week later) machine did the same thing until it was toast at 148.03 miles. Both pistons scored. Total top-end rebuild and adjustments to the carb and it is doing fine now. Was all covered under warrenty, but I have a new sled with a rebuilt top end. Go to Dootalk and you will fine you & I are not alone. Heck, even the 2010 sleds have detonation issues!

The 2006 500ss motor was not prone to the mid range ignition lean out problems as were our XP chassis 500ss motors(I burned out both on mine too). But nonethe less, the 06 should be checked out. Keep an eye on the plug color, anytime you want to run WOT for a while. In the case of our XP chassis sleds, any throttle position! I have EGT now, so I can keep an eye on things.
