06 Ski Doo 500 ss

I have an '06 Ski Doo 500 ss that I have been having some issues with. When i first start it, and if I have run it but not run it too hard or too long, it runs fine.

Once I have run it hard for a period of time I run into issues. After running it and when I come to a stop it idles very high, almost to the point it engages. If I hit the choke for a second it comes down for a little bit, about 30 seconds, then starts idling high again. Sometimes when I hit the kill switch, it doesnt shut off. It will also backfire once I shut it off.

Again, this only happens after the sled has been ridden hard for a period of time. If I have ridden it hard for 50 miles I will see these issues. After stopping for 30 minutes I will start the sled and it will idle fine and i wont see these issues again until after I have ridden it hard.

Any ideas what could be causing this? This has continued to happen after I had a tune up so I dont think it is carb related.

The high idle is somewhat common for the 500ss after a long midrange run, but not to the extent your talking. Mine will rev up to 3k at a stop, wait 15 seconds and it will come down slowly to 2k or so. My 800r does the exact same thing.

Check for bad carb boots, loose Y-Pipe. These will let air in and cause motor to lean out and go BOOM. If that doesn't do it, then you have clogged pilot jets.

My wife has a 500ss with the same problem and it was the carb boots. They crack up where the boot rubber meets the metal on the intake. If this is your problem then you will have to spend a pretty penny to replace them with skidoo parts; something like $125 apiece. Kimpex makes a replacement (part #07-102-04) for about $25 apiece but they are on back-order.

dootalk.com has a lot of information on this topic.

Thanks for the input. Again, I just had it serviced before winter, so i would be surprised (and kind of pissed) if its the jets. The carb boots makes sense, I will check that.

Thanks again.

Getting it serviced doesn't mean much anymore. Hard to find a good mechanic that will treat you right. I don;t trust anybody to work on my sled that works at a dealer!!!!!!
Best thing to do is get a BIG toolbox and start doing your own maintenance.
