06' Switchback 600 HO Recoil + coolant overflow tube

My recoil rope broke on my snowmobile this AM. I'm wondering if anybody knows what kind of project this is? Also, related is my coolant overflow tube melted shut on the muffler. This may have cause coolant to leak onto the rope, which weakened it and led to it breaking. My guess is this was improperly positioned from a previous service call. Where does the coolant overflow tube go? Right now mine is only about 5-7 inches long. My guess it was a lot longer before it melted on the muffler. Any help is appreciated. Where is a good place to get a service manual for this snowmobile? Can it be downloaded online? Sorry for all the questions. Any help is appreciated!

Not a hard project if you know how. If not it could take some time to get it right. Just need to get the right lenght of rope. Too much and it will over load spool and won't return all the way in. Too little rope and you will dead end it everytime you pull and possibly break the plastic spool. Also need to get the spring tendtion right. Not enough tendtion and the rope will not return all the way. too much and you could break the spring.

don't try it if you don't know what you are doing! Reels alone are $60 and springs are $30. you can quickly turn a $5 project into a $150 project by messing it up.

You can take the recoil off the sled and take it to a shop for repair and save some money. Its not that hard to remove the 8 or so bolts.

Well...Thanks for the advice. The good news is your spot on with your advice and the bad news is its a day too late! Thought we were doing good, until we wound the recoil backwards, which screwed up the spring. Needless to say the recoil is at the local Polaris dealer. Hopefully it wont be too painful.

Thanks for the advice anyway :)

Picked up the recoil today from the Polaris dealer. It cost $75. $30 part(spring) and 1/2 hour of labor $35. I guess it could have been worse! Oh well live and learn.

When I got the recoil back from the dealer they gave it back to me with the rope tied around the handle to keep it from going back in. Well, as I was putting the bolts in, I moved the handle and to my dismay the rope unraveled and went back in the recoil. Imagine the words that came out of my mouth....

Tried to fix, thought I did. Even started the snowmobile, but after I shut it off, the rope wouldn't go back in. Took it back to the dealer again. They said the spring was broke again. They fixed and charged me for another new spring. My bad.

Well, I put the recoil back on again last night. Had no problems and made sure there was no way the rope was going back in :) Pulled it a few times before I put it on and it seemed to work fine. I started it and it worked fine.

Today I started it to take for a short test ride to make sure the other things I worked on were all fine. Once I got back and shut off the snowmobile to inspect my work and all was fine...finally, until I went to start the snowmobile to put it away. The rope came out and won't go back in again! #@$&#%@$$@!!!!!!

I took the recoil off and am taking to the dealer again tomorrow. I will not pay another penny for this. I know for a fact that I did nothing for it not to work correctly. Why would it not work correctly????
