I was in the U.P. over the weekend and it was cold -18. Could not get it to start. Ran for 10 seconds and the was it. Took it into a heated barn and warmed it up and finally got'er going. Thinking of changing the plugs but I know that sounds easier than it is. Maybe the relays too. What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Freind has one. He had a relay go bad one time. Called Pat's Yamaha, they told him to use hair drier on a relay switch for 5 mins & then it started. We rode to Pat's & got the new design replacement. Pat's said the original relay had problems & won't open if too cold.

that started happening to my 07 Phazer mtn Lite. Happened out in the bush, luckly I had my buddy with his RX1 back up and point his exhaust at the relays with my side panes open and it started up

So there's another use for rear pipes besides handwarmers and hotdog cookers!!

Going to pick up at friends house tonight. If I get it started do you think I should still change the plugs or just the relays?

Unless you have more then 10,000 miles on the sled I would not change the plugs. It does not sound like the problem is spark plugs.

I had to replace plugs a few times on my 03 RX1, my buddy loved the motor and would start my sled when I wasn't there and only run it for a minute, that's not good on these machines. Typically the machine would still fire, spit and sputter but not completely start and the plugs would be bad, if the relay is bad I believe you will have no spark at all so it wouldn't even fire.

What is your sled doing?

Me and a buddy each bought 03 RX1's and his would start good always and mine would not. If it were frigid and i didn't choke it properly I could foul out the plugs, His would always run with the choke on and as it warmed up for the first few minutes he would just ease off the choke and the rpm would stay up, mine would chug and lag and sometimes foul the plugs. I never did investigate as to what the difference but something was different between identical machines.

Buddy pulled it home for me. Went to pick it up last night, would not fire. CRANK CRANK CRANK. I met someone in the u.p who told me to just barely touch the gas which allows for more air and it started. Ran rough and when i let go of the gas, staled. Repeated and held the gas for thirty seconds. It stayed running on a few cylinders and the Three and then the Fourth! Let it run for about five minutes after the red light turned off. Drove it around a little bit and loaded it on my trailer. After loading it the rpms dropped and sounded like it wanted to stall again. Just bought four relays and four plugs. Definatly changing relays, debating aboout the plugs. Quite a chore but i think i can do it. Unless you think they will clean up. I live on a frozen river and can run it hard to clean it up.

ProblemSolved! Changed relays and it fired right up! Left plugs sitting on seat for future use. Thanks everybody.

If the relay ever freezes up in the bush, all you got to do is tap on it or warm in by hand or pour some relatively warm fluid over it.
