I sold my firecat and my 07 phaxer to get something newer, I have owned all brands except ski-doo. I have heard good things and bad, which I'm sure they all are, but I need your opinions on the 800r good and bad . thanks

I have 1600ish miles on mine and so far I really like it. Good power, good fuel economy, and after I had the oil pump adjusted it is pretty darn good on oil!

MXZXP800r in our group handles well has good size windshield on it for wind protection rides pretty good too. X Shocks being rebuilt now after 3500 miles which was about the same with my 2003MXZX. Lots of updates for 2008 XP & dash blew out still not fixed & no speedo. We can't get 800r better than 10mpg & sucks a lot of oil too. Dealer has tried everything so we think just the way it is when 800r ridden hard. Some say they do a lot better on gas & oil useage but don't know how hard they ride compared to us. All & all a good sled but get the X package for best shocks so you can rebuild when needed.

We ride pretty hard, and hit the off trail when available so it is working. For the first 500 miles it drank oil like it was going out of style, took it in to Trackside in Eagle River, Wi and they adjusted the oil pump. Now I use just slightly more oil than my buddies 600sdi.

We did all that too & oil use got better but 800r mired at 10MPG & given up on that. We have doo 4tek, my Yam Attack, & we plan gas stops to 800r no more than 90 mile range or problems. 150 Yam 4s & 130 Doo 4s getting about 15 mpg very simular. MXZXP800r good sled & engine just don't like the 10 MPG.

Just bought an '09 XP 800R renegade at the beginning of this season and love it. My last sled was an '06 F7 EFI. I've put 700+ miles on it this season and while it is still not great on gas/oil...it's ages better than my F7. My only dislike is that it is not fuel injected...I will never again buy a sled with a carb. The throttle is lazy when it's real cold, and is difficult to re-start after the engine is warm. Needless to say I am anxious to see what comes of the 800 e-tec. You won't be disappointed. It's strong and smooth all the way through the powerband, and is a real arm-stretcher when you pin it.

Just bought a 09 xp 800r Renegade. Put on 60 miles and bam the engine light came on. Put on 90 miles and both the engine and temp light came on. It's going back to the dealer tomorrow. I'm a long time cat guy (07 crossfire) that went to his first ski doo. First 60 miles was a blast but not happy know only having 100 miles on the machine and heading back to the dealer... Not a great impression so far. This sled better not be a lemon. If the warning lights stay off, it's going to be a roit to ride.

800r

I bought my 09 800r renegade new a year ago and I have had zero problems. There is nothing I can say bad about mine after 2000 miles. I don't understand all of these mpg issues... I ride with about ten different sleds when we go on trips to the U.P. most 600-700 cc. Mostly polaris and a couple skidoos one of which is the same as mine only an 08.. I always with the same miles between fill ups put in 1 to 1 1/2 gallons less gas everytime. Like clockwork when I look at my pump then look at one of my buddy's I don't even say anything anymore. We ride pretty hard and do alot of powder riding as well. My sled on the otherhand does use the most oil in comparison. prolly around 85 miles to a quart at best. but oil is cheap and my dealer talked me out of cutting the oil back. I guess I like mine enough that I'm gonna spring order a new one in march..

09 800R shorty

I'm not brand loyal so let that be said.I like different things from all manu's. Like above I get 10 mpg. and it drinks more oil than my AC. ( hard to believe ). Done some mods , tower brace, Goodwin belt tensioner, and major changes to the front end shocks, springs , wider a-arms,spindles . The 2010's have better shocks up front as do the 09 gades & TNT's. No big issues. Just the normal maintenance ( belts, hyfax, ect... ). My rec, if you buy 1 is to get a couple of models up with the good rebuildable shocks. The Renegades are allegedly easier to tune for cornering. It does give you a work out if you ride more than 150-200 miles a day. They are very fast, no-one will run away from you in the straights. Another thing to look for is coolant leaks, mine still leaks ( when it cools down at night ) after 4600 miles and 4X's to the 2 different dealers. Sorry for the negative report but it is what it is. I won't buy another 1. Maybe a different model. This is not a fair appraisal, I end up modifiying all my sleds for my riding needs. Each manu has it's +'s & -'s. After a couple of years when I get to the 6500-7K mile mark then things start failing. (IMO)

mjkaliszak, I know one of the fixes for the coolent leak was replacing all the large OEM crimp type pipe clams on the large diameter hoses with regular screw type hose clamps. Mine leaked a little as well when I first got it and now it's stopped.

So far I'm not liking what I hear, anyone else.

So far I like my XP Summit. I can't complain too much, just like all the manufacturers you have your issues with each. I bought my 800R for the power / torque / price (as used) and not the fuel / oil savings. Really when I was looking at them last spring it was between the M8 or this Summit 800R. I got the best $ deal on this.

What are your major concerns right now with the 800R engine?

Was hoping to hear 800r doing better than 10mpg that we get. But only want to hear hard riding mpg never putt putt ride in our group. The coolent leak was PIA but can be fixed. That whole clamp thing was a shame.

It seems like it's the "I can't find it " problem with the leak. I know it's replace all of them to fix it right. I'm putting in a call to BRP about the 4 trips to the dealers. I should not have to deal with this for $9200 or close enough. They should have pulled the motor in the 1st place and replaced all the clamps. I most certainly am not doing it, it's their bad and will cost them down the road. The most miles I got was 117 on the tank, I had to " limp it " at 1/4 throttle for 20+ miles .I don't know if it will make it much more than that.

I have a 2008 800xp. It did have the first year problems but have not had any after all the updates. I am 250 pounds it has never got less then 15 mpg and oil useage is good. I did buy a 4 year warranty and have not used it. I have about 4500 miles on and would buy another. They are cold to ride you should go to dootalk and look at the post. If they did have an etech back then I would of bought that.

My dad rides Yamaha 4 strokes and we get the same mpg if I am following him. I did put a clutch brace on it. The first belt blew at 2500 but was my fault track froze and had to hammer out ice chunk. But I would buy an extended warrany again for piece of mind.

It has been proven.... that we are hard on equiptment . The Doo is the only sled running right now ( in my camp ) the Poo has a twisted crank ant the Cat has " servo " problems.

Whats a clutch brace and why do I need one, another friend just got his 2010 and his clutch blew in pieces, I have not talked to him yet, but another buddy said his pissed because its still in the shop after several weeks. I heard ski doos are slow on getting parts but that could be the dealer as well.

I have a '08 800r X Package and it is the best sled I have ever owned. No major problems. It is great on gas mileage (15+ mpg) and I ride the trails pretty hard and always let her rip on the lakes and straightaways. It uses about .75 quarts of oil per tank of gas. It handles like it is on rails and has plenty of power. I have hit 115 mph (on GPS) on a hard packed lake.
