1995 sled, 15 years old, and over 10,000 miles, I'd say this motor lived a good life. It was on borrowed time, something finally wore out. Time for a rebuild.....

X2. I only hope I can make it as long as your motor did. That motor is about the same as a 75 yr old man on his original knees and hips.

Chassis good, carbs were cleaned start of the season every year whether they needed it or not! on third set of complete bearings, original sks track, only a few hyfax changes as sled maybe has 1000 on groomed trails. chain case fluid changed every year with auto transfliud, drive chain has been adjusted 100 times lol.not to many sets of carbides cause of lakes portage trails, hardly ever crossed blacktop.primary clutch spring was broke this time. had clutch kit put in at 4900,secondary gone thru, multiple belts, maybe a dozen.lots of cold weather starts in the bush.handwarmers and voltage reg been only other issues!I posted this to show that if a sled istaken care of they will go along ways. had friend who lost drivers license and drove a 88 phazer for 14,000 miles in one winter.carbides and hyfax a few times! i have worked on a few 800 libertys and some had crank issues and power valve failures cause of extra heat compaired to 600-700s

"!I posted this to show that if a sled istaken care of they will go along ways. had friend who lost drivers license and drove a 88 phazer for 14,000 miles in one winter." (partial quote from above)

You got that right. Some one who has this kind of track record should be nominated to be an embassador to the snowmobile industry!!!!

Thats a good run, you took to good of care. If it had needed a top end job it would probably still be running. It looks as if the needle bearing wore and locked in the rod ground the bottom of the pin and rocked the piston till it broke?

If it had happened earlier in the season when the sled was first out of summer storage, I would say the wrist pin seized in the piston during storage. Would never have run a couple months with the wrist pin seized.

You sure are hard on stuff ubee. It is obvious that your use of auto-trans fluid in the chaincase contributed to this catastrophe. You of all people should know that you should only use OEM lubricants. I don't feel sorry for you at all. It may take you another 250 miles or so if you just cut off the connecting rod on the sick cylinder and put it all back together. You will have a 1 cylinder 250 but it will still be more dependable than a new 800.

40 miles from Greenbush. Dave and Durmont Wahl and Troy Pierce are from Greenbush. Durmont worked for AC for years until they went broke the first time. All the Wahls are very down to earth guys that have learned all they know from hands on experience. I don't think any of them ever went to engineering school but they can and do make just about anything. When they were running the twin track 'Doos Durmont made a clutch-pack that ran off the steering column that separated the power to the tracks when turning left. It would have taken a year or two for a mfgr to come up with this but it took Durmont about 2 days and a twelve pack of beer. Amazing guy. Dave is my age and used to race stock cars. Have known them for years. Where exactly are the Smiths from?

Larry Rugland used to work with Burt Bassett out of Roseau but moved to Wisc about 10 years ago. He is still doing the same thing. I think he had a sled in the Soo 500 that did pretty well this year. Burt Bassett is still with Pol and has a new shop north of Roseau. Burt was one of the original Pol CC riders and later was in to hillclimbing. He got wrecked pretty good at a hillclimb out in Colorado about 15 years ago but is still into building sleds. His current hot set-up is a Pol 1200 which is based off of their discontinued watercraft line. It is supposed to put out about 200 hp without nitrous or turbos or SC's. We also have Lawrence Grube from Bathgate ND who was an AC factory rider way back when. There are a lot of guys from around here who have raced through the years. Hallock is 65 miles from both Roseau and TRF. I myself even raced some CC way back when the first Indys came out. The real iron men used to race the I-500 from Winnipeg to St. Paul in un-groomed ditches back in the 70's. These guys were the real deal riding junk in horrible conditions. Old-time Cross-Country makes modern day SnoCross look like child's play.

Those were the days,Archie Simonson, grand forks,Wesley Smith,Burt Basset,Arlyn Sagge,Jim Dano and the list goes on that i remember from 76-77 CC races. I was mechanic for Mike Trapp,we worked out of Virgina Minn. and we run LC 340 CC RV. Mike won the Minnesota Gov Cup in Forest Lake,Stan Hayes and his bro Terry were our team mates! Mikes time for 240 miles was 3.08 = 77mph average. Those 340s were suppossed to be 65 hp then. Had a beer with GOV. Rudy Perpich. Polaris,Cats ,Deeres ,outnumbered us.1 Rupp ,Jay Sperry was real fast on lake races! wow, thats 33 years ago

76 was the year that JD won the 500 with their Liquidator. Jon Carlson was riding it. That was the year they had about 1/2 the guys in the race running Liquidators. I used to have both a 75 JD 340s and a 74 JD 74 295s which were the roots for the 76 Liquidator. Wish I never would have sold them!!! Anybody know where to find a '76 Liquidator???
