Thanks to all who helped me on the last post. I am all set to replace the pump on Sat but how bout this.•••• ran fine all along, and then didn't run it in a few days, started it for a short burst across the yard(100 yards)and shut it down.. Went back to start it and crank and crank.. If I cranked it for like 30 seconds there was no firing.. After I stopped cranking but just left the key on it would have two or three puffs like it wanted to go.. It did this about 20 times so I figured these are known for the pump and it has never been replaced so now it's time.. I went out today after a few days and wa-la it fired right up and works fine..I rode it about 20 miles with about 10 shutoff's and restarts and worked fine.. Should I still replace it or should I just try plugs and wires for a little tune up as I think they are original also??? Any help from the smarties here would help.. Can a fuel pump just start workin again??

Can a fuel pump just start working again? YES. I had one run fine. I filled up the gas tank, drove home and parked. It never ran again. If you were to take it in to a shop they would do a fuel pump pressure test. This would tell if the pump is good or weak. They can also test the resistance of the motor to see if it's drawing too many amps. Good Luck

You should definately put a pressure gauge on it before tackling that project. Find out what the oem specs call for, somewhere in the 50-60 psi range. Watch the gauge while it is running and also let it sit overnight then hit the key to the run position and check the reading. If all checks out, wait till it throws ya fits again and check it then. If all checks out then something else is the problem.

I had a 1988 olds 88 that started acting up with intermitant start problems like yours. I was a long way from home when it wouldnt start one time so I got out and gave the tank a good rap and it started. The new pump was in the next day and never had another problem.

When was the fuel filter changed? It might be plugged and what is happening is the dirt is plugging the filter and after it sits for a while the dirt falls out of the screen and allows fuel to flow, but then the dirt in the bottom gets stired up and re plugs the filter until the fuel flow stops and falls away again. Or it cold be a bad ground on the pump.
