1999 skidoo secondary wont close

I opened the sheeves to change the belt, removed and replaced the old belt and when I backed off the tool, the sheeves would not close. any ideas.

Take it apart..clean it and check for worn out parts....when was last time apart??. Check spring size and tension.

also have you tried to roll it by hand to see if it will release and engage.

did you rotate the belt backwards as you removed the tool?

I hope to go back out and look at it after work today. Thanks for the ideas. If I get it to work, I still plan to take apart in summer.
