Being born and raised in Lake Geneva, I can personally say stay off LG.... LG is one of the most dangerous lakes in the state because of springs and west to east rapid water flow under the ice...... God bless the family, hate to hear of this.

LG a super deep lake and during the time I lived there always open water over in front of Williams Bay. I would ice skate in areas known to have good ice but would never take a snowmobile on the lake. IDK what these guys were thinking but had to know a bunch of cars just went thru the ice last week by downtown LG. Sorry one died but not a lake for sledders...stay off not safe ever.

A close family friend lost his 1970 Panther with Montana pipes after going through the ice on LG following his buddies. He survived, but the sled is still there after going through when it was only a year old...

I didn't realize lake geneva was that scketchy. Only time I was ever on it I got invited to ride ice bikes with a BSA dirt bike club. They used to plow a track right on Williams bay with a truck( not sure if they still do?). The only reason I bring it up is because the year I went up was not a great winter. I remember being surprised how much ice was in the bay even though the chain-o-lakes in IL was wide open.

Oh yeah where this person died hardly ever froze over in coldest weather about 200 feet deep there. My coz dove in that spot I tended they went down down 200 feet used all his air but depth meter said 200 feet shined his light down but could not see bottom. I used to snorkle all over LG ran into a strong current off black point could not swim against it almost like an undertow had to go out with current then wait for it to weaken then swin in at different angle and hardly any wind that day. Never had that happen on any other inland lake. On the positive side lots of neat old stuff on bottom of LG... Late 1800s & early 1900s residents dumped garbage on the lake ice. I found cork round bottom water bottles just laying there & was told dated to about 1860. Great playground for any water sport not snowmobiling too dangerous for that.

The "bays" on the lake..."Geneva bay & Williams bay" can be deceiving, you'll see cars, fishing shacks, people out on the ice in those bays and unfortunately people think the whole lake is safe..... the main body of the lake that runs west to east from Fontana to Big Foot beach is never to be trusted...... I have sledded for 40+ years and have been out on the "bays" of LG on a sled hundreds of time... but in those 40+ years I've NEVER rode the main body of the lake....to unpredictable. I've seen frozen ice at 9am and by 3 pm that same day, a huge hole of open water appears out of nowhere.........don't ever take for granted that just because you see car's or people on the lake its all safe......this is the same lake that 20 + cars fell through the ice 2 weeks ago.....

don't be the first down the middle, at night when you don't know conditions. never felt a current even at the lake outlet, it's 144 ft deep, and no boogeymen down there. very sad occurrence but lake geneva is just like any other lake, unique, and should be treated with respect.
