I made my first sled trip to the U.P.
4 great buddy's were going to stay at Scott's Superior Inn in Onatobaggon. We actually arrrived up there Nov 30th. The night before I called up there and it was raining, we decided to head up anyways, nothing else to do, 2 of us were 23, one was 21, and one was 19. We used my buddy Joes parent's Ford Econoline van, and the homebuilt trailer our buddy Scott built. Sleds, wow, LOL, I was on a 1987 Cougar, Joe was on a brand spanking new 1992 Polaris RXL 650, Tom and Scott were both on 1989 Cougars. Crossing into Mi at Watersmeet we started seeing cars with fresh snow on them, as we were heading out of Bruce Crossing, a car went by that looked like it had a foot of snow on it. Hmmm, we were getting a little excited to say the least. The further north we went, the deeper the snow was. When we arrived at Scott's Superior Inn, and were checking in, we were informed that a fresh 18" of snow had fallen the night before, I just about peed myself. We then had to wait until almost dark to head out, deer hunting ya know, it seemed like it took us forever to get over to the Candle Light Inn for supper, those .75 depth tracks weren't too good in that deep snow LOL. Funniest moment that night, Joe got stuck with the (ReXL as we called it), and my buddy Tom got behind him to push him out, with his face shield open, let me tell you, that RXL revved up real quick like, and Tom's face was HAMMERED with snow. It was packed in there so tight, he had to take his helmet off to breath. LMAO. A perfect impression of his face was made. Holy crap, we all laughed so freaking hard. The next morning was a bluebird day, and it was totally awesome. A trip burned into my memory banks forever, there have been a TON of trips since then, only 2 of us still ride now, but that first trip, will always be the best.
That trip started my addiction to the U.P., and I think it has only gotten worse over the last 20 years.
