2000 Polaris 600 VES; gas in the airbox

We have a 2000 XCSP (Gen II chassis) with the 600 VES motor. About 5000 miles in total. It's never been apart and runs well and has never had any motor issues. Last year and this year it's been ridden mainly at home (backup sled) and my son noticed this year the fuel use has really increased. He's home today for a snow day, was busting through the new snow and was alarmed at the rapid gas consumption. He started poking around, pulled the airbox and found some gas INSIDE the airbox.

I'm thinking we have one or two cracked reeds which is allowing the backflow during the start of the compression stroke. Other than losing a piston skirt are there any other common reasons for this?

Also, sled runs great. Starts on 1-2 pulls and does not seem to be down on power and is definitely running on both cylinders.

Going to pull the carbs tonight and take a look. Thanks in advance for ideas and advice!

Gas in the air box is normal with a carbed sled. You also have snow dust that enters the air box and it probably look like more gas.I don't think you will have a reed problem because it would not run right and it would have a bad idle.(If you do have a reed problem,I have almost new oem reeds/cages i will sell cheap)If it runs good and you think you are using allot of gas check for water/ice in the float bowl or check the drain tube on the float bowl for leaks.
