I'd like some feedback on this sled. I found one with 1300 miles. It's actually a neighbors that I do not know well. Asking $1500. It has not been ridden in a few years, but he did fire it up for me to take a ride. It ran pretty bad, but most likely due to old gas and a lot of Stabil in the tank. It has sat uncovered for at least 2years, but is still in decent shape. I can handle this, my question is what is the opinion of the sled? Engine reliability, etc.
I would rather have a newer platform sled, but this fits the current budget. He also has a trailer that I don't need, but could certainly use to flip and regain some value out of. 2 place, open.
Thank you for any feedback!

The 550 is a good & reliable motor (unlike some of it's bigger brothers-lol!) With a little elbow grease & some TLC (idler wheels/bearings, chain case oil), I think it would be a good sled, nothing to rave about, but a good sled. If you can get it for less than $1500, better sled yet.-Mezz

The Gen II chassis was a blast in the tight twisty woods but is a var cry from the edge chassis in terms of ride quality. The 550 is a good motor and I would expect with only 1300 miles it should need just the basic carb clean, chaincase oil, grease job and a little checkover. If you want more than a 75mph sled maybe look for a Gen II XC 500!
When you look itsleds over just remember that if you buy a $1,500 sled and stick $500 into it you may as well step up and look at $2,000 sleds. Also the sleds you find in the $2,000 market vary greatly from fan to liquid cooled.

We can help with some great options if we know a bit more on what you expect. Performance and features?

You sound like the trailer is included with the sled for 1500.
that seems like a good deal if the trailer isn't rusted junk and the sled's seat, plastics and track are in good condition which they should be at those miles.

I had one and put over 6000 miles on it with no problems. It is the edge chassis and is a blast to ride in the twisties it is light weight and the power to rate ration is great for that. You can throw it around in the corners with plenty of power. Top speed 65-70 downhill with the wind at your back and pinned for 3-4 minutes. But I did not buy it to go fast. If your not going to buy it let me know I miss my old one and would consider buying it myself.

That is funny....My '99 440 XCF SP would do 80-85 all day....I think the Edge was introed in 01 to the liquids only....fanners was still in the genII

Does anyone know if this is the same 550 that is still used by Polaris today?

The cylinders are now Nicisil linned and the carberator settings have been changed to address a lean condition in the midrange.

Thanks for the info! I have 2 young boys (12/9) that have been riding since 3yrs old(kitty kat, 120, 340). My oldest sons 340 was getting a little beat up, so I sold it and gave him mine(97 Indy Trail). We mainly ride lakes and little trails in Oakland County, nothing big yet. I do plan on taking them up north to the trails in a few years. I would mainly be doing the same thing with this sled. I was going to try and get the trailer with the deal. It needs new tires. Thanks for all of your feedback!

Bottom line with these older sleds no matter the miles is, either you can turn a wrench yourself and fix basic stuff like carb and clutch cleaning,
fluid replacement, track, slides, bearing service,...everything short of a rebuild..... or you can't or have no desire to....in that case buy sonething newer because at $90.00 per hr shop rate no sled is a bargain if it goes in for any service.
