2001 Polaris 600 XC SP VES (Variable Exhaust System) sound

Hello everyone I am new to these Tech Talk threads so please bear with me. I just bought a 2001 Polaris 600 XC with the VES. The engine has less than 500 miles on a complete rebuild. The sled has lots of power and starts first or second pull every time. It does have the infamous high idle issue that seems to be common with these motors, idle just shy of 4k rpm then a quick choke or throttle up brings it back down to normal.

The real question I have is should there be a noise that sounds like air rushing (like when you pull a spark plug out and turn a motor over) this is happening only at low speed 15 to 35 mph. I think it may just be the VES cycling but I am not sure and I haven't been able to find any reliable intel on it at all. Never owned a VES sled before.

VES should not have anything to do with it. VES not even working at that low of a speed. Could it be that you are just hearing a noise that is always there but you only hear it at low speeds because when you get going faster you hear engine whine and track noise? If the sled starts and runs fine you just might be a little paranoid. Or else take it to a dealer and see what they have to say.

Paranoia is a possibility , maybe I should add that it feels and sounds just like a boost bottle even though it does not have them. Does that make sense?

Where does that sled draw its intake air from? You could just be hearing that. Certain AC models had a very noticeable intake noise. Again it is a sound that is always there but you can only hear it at low speeds.

Went through some of it last night, while running on a stand. Sled has a brand new belt installed so the clutch needs to be adjusted. Track is engaging slightly while at idle, thinking that the sound is coming from the clutch misalignment. Also found that the brake pads are shot so the whole caliper assembly rattles and a missing screw on the coolant hose clamp mount to the re-coiler was causing excessive wear on the coil housing. Going to go through the whole sled tonight in a warm garage and see what else is missing, half done or not adjusted.. Oh the joy, at least it runs strong! Thanks.
