2005 Polaris 550F

A four years ago, I purchased a NOS 2005 Polaris 550 Fan Super Sport for my son. It seems to have good power but is temperamental when riding in deep snow, on slow technical trails, or when the temp is above 25 F. I've seen a bunch of blogs on this machine/engine having mid-range overheating problems. The blogs suggest there is secret warranty the replaces the cylinders with plated versions, timing curve and carburetor jetting. Had the dealer run the VIN, it does not show that this sled was affected by this so called "secret warranty"

Does anybody definitively know what exactly we can do to get this thing to run like our guest sled - a 488F Indy Trail? Blogs are saying Jetting alone will not help.

Thanks

Although I am no expert on these newer 550 I have a 2000 and have read all about the problem when Polaris put them in the edge chassis. I guess the problem was in the edge the muffler is really close to the fan intake for the engine cooling so that the engine runs hot.

here is a link to discussion on how to solve the piston melt down and other issues:

Polaris did fix some sled that were out of warranty as "good will" for a time and changed the jetting made fuel pump modifications.

I have heard some people heat wrapped their exhaust system and/or added extra venting and increased the airflow by enlarging the air outlet though the hood.

Thanks, I does seem like a heat issue. This is my first fan sled and thought they were just temperamental. Then we got the older used guest sled, a 488 fan and quickly realized the newer sled is deficient. I wish I had spent the extra money on a liquid cooled machine for him. Thanks for the heat tip too. I did not pick up on that in my initial blog review.
