2005 SD GSX 600 SDI, temp sensor

I will try to keep this brief as I can, but want to give detail to see if anybody has any suggestions...

Wife was riding her sled this weekend in Raco (tons of snow by the way). About 2 hours into riding, a beeping and idiot lights start going off on her sled. The beep is the same as the back up beep, but about every half second vs. every second like when you are backing up. The temperature ligth and check engine light were both flashing as well.

I check temp of heat exchangers and engine block with my bare hand, they are both warm but not "hot" and feel similar to my sled. No overheating issues, and too much snow to be lack of snow cooling issue.

End up bringing to the Skidoo dealer in the Soo on Sat afternoon. They plug it in to their computer and it gives them "Engine temp" faults, even after sitting in my cold trailer for 2 hours before starting it up, so there was no way the machine was "hot". The problem was the service dept had no clue how to trouble shoot with the staff that was there. We cleared the codes, took apart and recapped all the sensors we could see/find on the machine, and still, as soon as we started it, the beeping and indicator lights would go off. We could get it to stop fof a while, and then it would start beeping again. Even replaced the DESS, both the tether and the part on the sled, without success.

Even when we shut the machine down, the beeping continued until you pulled the teather off.

So I basically decided I wasn't going to blow the motor up from overheating, so we rode it the rest of the weekend and the machine ran great, just had this annoying beeping and lights flashing on the dash. The beeping would sometimes go away after riding it for a while, but would come and go without any rhyme or reason, leading me to believe it is definitely electrical/sensor related.

Without taking it to another dealer to charge me $80/hr to tell me "they aren't sure", anybody have a similar experience or give me some troubleshooting ideas?

Sleds runs great, is not running hot, but the sensor (wherever it is) says the temp sensor is "hot". Thanks.

do you know where the sensor is located at and what exactly it is called? Did you swap it out or have the dealer do it? I would like to swap it out myself, but don't know where the sensor that you speak of is located??? Thanks for your help.

Sensor is located in the exhaust can..and points towards the battery. Has wires coming out of it that plug into a connector I believe the part number that you need is this 515176132. I swapped it out myself, when u install it, put some anti seize on the threads of the sensor. The sensor is fragile, do not drop it. Also you can do some testing of the sensor which is a resistor, more info to be had on dootalk. Use the partnumber and you can google it, might find a used one somewhere, which usually go for 100..new at todays prices looks to be around 200

I am having similar problems with my 2005 600 SDI renagade -
I will look into the heat sensor problem-
I wonder if doo had a few bugs yet to work out -pretty sure SDI came out in 04 -
thanks so much for your ideas

Ditto that, I remember reading quite a few threads about it. Sounded like a pretty easy, straightforward procedure if you have a decent multimeter and know how to use it.

Yes, SDI's came out in '04 but I don't know if this was a "bug" problem.....I never had any troubles with my '05. I think it's just a case of "luck of the draw". Sometimes electrical components last, sometimes they fail for no apparent reason.

drypowder-

when I went to the dealer, they sold me the temp sensor which comes off the top of the head on the intake side. Are you talking about the sensor in the big can of the exhaust outlet? I have not had time to work on it yet, but I will be peaved if they sold me the wrong one. Thanks for the info. I just don't want to go down the trouble shooting path of replacing sensors at $100-$200 a pop!

part number I bought was 515176043 Temperature Sensor

Again, I have not had time to swap this out yet to see if it makes a difference.......

You want the one that goes into the exhaust.. With your symptoms its exactly what mine did. I may have got the wrong part number, as the design changed. But you are probably needing the one that goes into the exhaust

update on the 2005 600 SDI renagade with similar problems:
after sitting all summer the sled started right up after dying on the trail twice at the end of the season -
I drove it 50 miles staying close to Timberline Sports in Bergland- sled completly shut down for good -this happened Tuesday 1/29-
Timberline quicky found a bad relay (sdi) and had me on the trail right away -( actually I had to go home and go back to work but the sled is ready!!)
Apparently the relay would fail and somehow still manage to connect later - I don't know-- but this about the 10th time (really 10) that Timberline has gotten me and my buddies back on the snow in very short order even when they were very busy. I have seen them working way later than they should and fixing problems I can not begin to fix -and like I said very quickly . They have actualy made custom parts for us when nesessary to get us going again. Honestly , I would not take my sled any place else and we intentionally ride in the Bergland area ( when there is snow) in part to be close to an exceptional ski-doo dealer for parts and service

Kinda off the subject, but I'd like to send a shout-out to Timberline as well. My wife and I got our new sleds from them in December; Marlin and crew were great to work with. Well worth the drive from Detroit!
