We checked in at Fortune Bay Casino and unloaded our sleds about 4 PM.Having called the Tower DNR before leaving we knew the lake was safe and well marked. We followed the markers across Lake Vermillion to Tower and then followed the Iron Trail to Embarrass. We had planned to ride to Babbit but found ourselves breaking trail along the power lines. After about 7 miles of very rough going and a few hidden boulders we decided to back-track.Back at Tower we went east on the Taconite Trail to about 5 miles of Ely.Took a break and decided it was supper time.We cruised back to Tower and back across the lake to the Casino.
In the morning on hearing the weather report we decided to ride until the trails got mushy. At 8 AM the temp was 28 degrees F.We had the sleds in the enclosed trailer so we drove the rig to Babbit (8 inches of snow there).Coming into Babbit, we saw a groomer going by.HOT DOG---Lets back-track his trail and see where he came from.We were headed towards Embarrass-the trail we were trying to do the night before. Some of it was 50 MPH good but it turned into a battle-field along the power lines---not enough base to cover the hidden boulders so we turned around and went north out of Babbitt towards Ely.Many-many trees weighted with ice and snow and blocking the trail. The groomer had not been through on this trail and we got tired of pushing our way through the trees.Turned around and back to Babbit, loaded up,and headed home. All the sleds came though with no scratches or damage so it was a good break-in for Jerry's new 1000 and Steve's new 600 Renegade. My 800 rolled over 6200 so no break-in there. The total miles ridden was 118.Pray for more snow and cold temps.
