2008 f8 question/ problem

I hope some one can help with this. Recently bought a used 2008 f8. Great shape only 800 miles.

I was out riding and after about 40 miles I got a ecu 12 that would come on occasionally. It would flicker on for awhile and then stop. Every now and then a ecu 15 would flick on.

The sleds performance never was effected... It ran great andi ended up putting on About 80 miles.

I am new to this type of machine (last sled I had was a 01 zr 600)

Here a few questions I have.
1) should I stop riding it because of a potential problem
2). What the heck are the ecu's?
3) I read somewhere there was recalls on them... If mine wasnt don't would cat still replace it? If they don't does it need to be replaced? How do I know if it was.

Thanks for any help!!!!!!!

I would guess those are error codes coming from your ecu or electronic control unit. I used to get false error codes on my FST Classic without any performance problems. You will need to have a dealer hook up their computer to it and clear the codes. I would call a Cat dealer first and talk to them about it, they will know what those error codes are. Have your VIN ready and they can check if any recalls are open on the sled and if any have been done. Let us know what you find out. I think if it ran fine, I would ride it, but call the dealer soon.

Code 12 is for the ignition coils - check the writing to them for pinch points or rub marks and it wouldn't hurt to check the plug wires for the same and to make sure they are seated fully on the spark plugs. If you can see white insulator on the plug, the plug wire isn't seated all the way.

Code 15 is for four strokes, are you sure it was 15?

I bought a "new to me" 09 800 last spring and tore it apart somewhat to check it over and found a broken ground on the engine. That would cause problems like you've mentioned. The F-series sleds were known in 07 and 08 to have wiring wear through issues in different spots too. On mine it was obvious that when they built the sled they put the ground wire on without seeing if the wire would be too short there. And it was and broke it off.

The other thing to do is check your ECU. It is on the right side of the sled-I think. If it doesn't have a white dot on it, it probably is still the original. Any Cat dealer can run your VIN and find out if your ECU has been replaced-as they had a recall on them. If it hasn't they will STILL replace them free. Just take it to your dealership and have them send it in-if that is the case. I just got my new one this fall for free. I bought two sets of slides from the dealer to show my appreciation. Mine always threw Code 21 I think whenever I put it in reverse. It also reeked of unburned gasoline just sitting in the trailer. Could never find any gas dripping. Since the new one has been on it is great. Also fuel mileage should be great again-like when I first got it. I had gotten about 16 mpg when new and had been down to about 12 the last two seasons. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the info... I looked and there is NOT a white dot on it. I will take it to the dealer on Wednesday and see what they can do. I rode it last night again (80 miles) and I put ECU 12 came up again, then I got a ECU 21... then I got a ECU 15 (that is a 4 stroke code) I think its just needs to be replaced. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the help.
