2008 Polaris Dragon Keeps Burning out Tail Light?

I have a 2008 dragon 600. Every 300 miles or so the tail light is burnt out and I have to change it. I've contacted several dealers in my area. One dealer says that its probably a short underneath the seat/gas tank. Another dealer says to put a Victory motorcycle bulb in because it's a tougher filament and works better with bumps, etc. If I recall correctly, its only burns out on the filament for the running light, not the brake. Anyone experiencing this? It's driving me (and the riders behind me) nuts.

Logically there are only two things that would cause the tail light to burn out.

A short is NOT one of them. If the hot lead shorts, NO lights...if the ground side shorts light just flickers.

If the bulb is fragile...as the other dealer says then the hot filament could bounce around and break easier.

But more likely the culprit is a surge in voltage which will kill a light bulb quicker than you can say Johnny Walker.

The later might be hard to find without swapping parts with another machine.

Since not many guys complain about tail light burn out, I suspect they you might have bigger fish to fry as it can kill the headlight, dash lights, and maybe even the hand warmers, eventually too.

I purchased a cheap digital compass that plugs into a cigarette lighter. Not only does it keep compass direction but it tells the inside and outside temp (same on a sled...obviously) but it also has a constant read out of the voltage.

Amazon sells them for about $35. You can tell if your voltage is spiking and killing your bulbs. It is surprisingly accurate. And when your done with your trouble shooting, you have a lighted digital compass for your sled.

Yes this is a problem on Poos. I have a 08 700 with the same problem. I havent cured it yet, but some ppl have been putting LED lights on it. I think you have to run a regulator though. Its not just a direct replacement. But I have heard that once its done the problem is gone. Im not sure if Im going this route or trying a different bulb first. I have 3000 miles and gone through prolly 7 bulbs. But I make my dealer give me new ones 2 at a time for free.

I had this problem time after time. There is a service bulletin out on this or a polaris tech tip. It is a vibration thing and they do have new mounts they can put it. Call your dealer and have it done. It is not a surge and it is not a voltage regulator, trust me!

Is there somewhere that I can look up the service bulletin for polaris. If the bulletin for the tail lights exists, I can't find it anywhere. Anybody have an address?

Hmmm, I asked the dealer to look up the bulletins for my sled there was only one and it did not pertain to this. I then told him about my bulbs burning out and that's when he told me I should put a Victory motorcycle bulb in because it had a stronger filament......?

We have a couple 08 Dragons and IQ's in our group and have all had this problem. There is no rhyme or reason for how they break but the filament just breaks in half. We bought a couple of "HD" bulbs from the dealer and they seam to be holding up. The only difference between the bulbs is the HD bulb has a center post that supports the middle of the filament.

Handiman...that's the unit and it has held up for me at least, just fine. Wealth of info for cheap and I always know what direction I am headed.

Sounds like for the above reports it isn't a voltage surge, and perhaps Polaris should find better chinese bulbs to put in the expensive machines.

As to the LED not working, I think that LED needs DC and won't work with AC power. You should be able to correct that with a bank of diodes to keep the juice flowing in one direction. Those LED's are quite complicated little units.

Heavy Duty is what the Polaris dealer referred to it as. I don't have a part number with me but if I remember correctly it was used in the order Widetrack sleds.

I'm going to convert to LED and will be using a wiring convertor by Bluhm Enterprises. Here is a link. Kind of expensive but I'm tired of changing bulbs in below zero temps in the dark!
