I know this isn't a sled question, and I did research a little on line on truck sites but was hoping one of the jd'rs have experienced this and what the end result was. My shop, plow and toy hauler truck is a 2012 f-350 6.7 xlt lariat and about a week ago I noticed it was constantly cleaning exhaust, when I was out plowing yesterday morning it was doing the same to a point where my exhaust system almost to the tip is white. I had talked to the shop I use for service when this started and they said the truck was trying to do a regen cycle and to drive it for a while. I dropped it off this morning and they are going to force a regen. Has anyone experienced this? seeing how hot the exhaust got I hope it didn't damage the system, Im not getting any check engine lights so I am assuming the def/exhaust filter and series of sensors are all ok. Again was hoping someone may have experienced this and what happened or end result was. Thanks! heading to Minnesota and upper peninsula for 10 days in a few weeks and don't want any issues.

The Regen process is to remove carbon from the exhaust system. There's a container/filter that collects carbon and the Regen is supposed remove the carbon with heat. So yes, it's going to get hot but it is normal. Most diesels do this automatically, others have a manual switch that can activate the process. Hope this helps.

Gary, thanks for the input! you cannot manually activate the regen system on this truck without software, Good news though, exhaust system is fine, exhaust filter is good and clean and all the sensors are ok, needs a software update, evidentially there is a service bulletin for this condition if everything else checks out ok, as there is a test procedure to make sure any number of the exhaust components are failed, evidentially it must put itself into a loop or something, so if anyone else ever encounters this it may not be doom and gloom for your $3000 exhaust/refinery system.

My '16 would keep trying to re-gen until it was "finished". So if you are not running it long enough and the re-gen is not finished and the truck stops or idles too long, the current re-gen would stop and then would start again next time truck was running and met the required conditions. Lots of short runs will make it seem like it's constantly in re-gen. Probable that just hopping on the highway for a 30 minute run will let it finish and solve it.

Could be something more going on, but have not encountered it.

Did a long idle one time waiting for the bridge to open (17 hours or something like that). Truck would force a regen while sitting there idling, seems like every 2.5 hours but may have been a bit further apart.

That's also what I had expected too but tried that on a 150 mile round trip highway run and it just never stopped, now the warning to drive vehicle comes on the instant you start the truck and it never stops to a point it smells like the rubber hanger mounts are melting, be1ng that there a service bulletin addressing this issue, hopefully it will fix it because everything else checks out. Ive had the truck for 5 years now so am very familiar with how the system is supposed to work but all of a sudden not doing the same anymore, the only other problem I ever had with the exhaust was a heater in the def tank and a number 4 sensor and that broke off when taking it out so got a bung repair kit and just relocated it about an inch from its original location. Im just glad the filter isn't plugged as I do have 135,000 on it now.

Glad to hear there's a bulletin for it, should be covered and a "known" problem. Definitely sounds like something not normal.

Have had DEF tank heaters fail in my 2016 F350 and 2012 2500HD. Neither were covered due to mileage.

There is a video out there by a “tuner” guy. He shows when it goes into regen it runs for 15 mins and the exhaust tip goes to 1,100 degrees (as I recall). The truck he has in a newer super duty where you can force it and it is in regen while idle (engine auto revs up throughout cycle).

Those of you that had the def heater go out, how did you know or suspect it had failed?

Oh, don't worry, the truck will tell you there's a problem, though not what the problem is... Even if the outside temps are well above freezing, the heater failure will generate a DTC and you'll get lots of warnings, error messages and then a count-down until the truck says it will no longer move because the emissions system may not be functioning as designed. That was my experience with both GM and Ford.
