84 Phazer Carb Synchronization

I'm helping/teaching a friend how clean the carbs on his 1984 Phazer. They were in really bad shape. Now squeaky clean!

Carbs were out of sync, so we dialed them in to open at the same time. Thing is, now at WOT, one butterfly looks like it’s going past WOT.

Carbs are linked mechanically. Only one throttle cable. Anybody have a vintage Phazer that’s run into this?

Been a while since I have been into that carb set up but when cleaning did you take the top plate off the carb for anything?? Seems like I had a problem like that once on an 89 and I had a screw had come loose on the top of the slide...again can't remember for sure that has been a few years and lot of beers ago...but I do remember it was something simple like that.

Yes, totally separated both carbs. But, before the dismantle, I noticed the synch was off. One carb looked totally closed. The other butterfly was slightly open.

I find it hard to believe that the carb butterflies would be staggered. Just doesn't make sense.

set them so they open at the same time at closed throttle. You dont spend much time wide open, and the minor difference in the butterfly position shouldnt affect the performance, air flow might be slightly different, but the fuel flow would be the same.

Also, make sure the linkage has slid back together properly between the carbs. And make sure the vent lines and fuel lines dont have any cracks between the carbs.

That's what I needed! Thanks jimfsr! Some rational thinking in my sometimes over detailed, over thinking mind.

Had the carb set at my desk, all day, agonizing as to how in the heck it can be insync on the bottom at not the top. Yep, you’re right! I doubt if that little guy is going to get pinned, at WOT, very often or for very long.

I was surprised at how fast and how smooth it fired up and ran! Even from just my base settings. Dialed it down to 1500-1600rpms and she just purrs. Smokes a ton, when pinned, but thats all the crud left over from the carbs being bunged up and the fogging oil. This too shall pass.

5500 miles and I know that little Phazer still has lots of fun left. Thanks again for all of your help. We did it again! Thanks to the folks here! Cheers!
