My brother has two 93 Ext 550 and the both have burn the left piston. The sleds have right around 4400 miles on them one he has owned one for ten years. The other he bought this fall and the motor was already blown.

Is this normal for these sled to have problems at this amount of use? Very good maintainence on the one that blew up today. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There's usually only three things that can, and do, cause a burned piston, lean fuel mix, lean fuel mix or maybe a lean fuel mix.

Lean fuel mix = Too much air or not enough fuel, either of which can be caused by several things.

You should always find the "Smoking Gun" (the cause) or you'll probably just burn it again.

We understand all that been snowmobiling for twenty plus years just weird both sled with appox. same miles burn left piston. I was asking if there is an inherit problem that shows up around this milage. Have found out the 580's 94,95 and 96 had a piston ring problem.

Those motors are pretty bullet proof. See some with as many as 10-15 thousand miles and still running strong.

I'm just sayin, Burned pistons? I think it's safe to say your problem is not related to any design flaw.
