95 Indy Lite Bogs Down

Ok - My 11 yr olds Indy Lite (340 cc) is driving me nuts.

The sled idles great, but with the engine warm and driving at 1/8 - 1/4 throttle and if you try to accelerate it bogs down until it dies.

If I catch it in time and I'll turn the choke on all the way and feather the throttle until the RPM's increase. Take the choke off & it goes like crazy all the way to full throttle. Slow down and it does the same thing.

Here's what I've done:
- Cleaned the carbs (twice)
- New head & exhaust gaskets
- New spark plugs
- Drained the gas & added 91 octane with a splash of Seafoam
- New fuel filter
- Adjusted the choke cables
- Jet needle in the 2nd slot from the top
- Air screws set at 1 1/2 turns

Since the problem is at 1/8 - 1/4 throttle I'm thinking about turning the air screws out another 1/4 turn and if that doesn't work maybe dropping the jet needle to the top slot.

But since it's my 11 yr old driving & he spends a lot of time driving around the yard below 1/2 throttle I don't want to lean it out to much.

Thoughts? Am I heading in the right direction or just chasing my tail.

Thanks - Skutr

I had a 92 Indy Trail dlx with same problem. A race mechanic tried many times to sort it out. Then a local farmer took it. It ended up on of the jets or needle was a complete 180 degrees off from what it should have been. Many did not notice "cuz it looked normal", he did, and it ran better than new after he flipped it.

I would try raising the needle, you have lowered it(LEANED)and you have to add fuel(choke) to get it to go past that point. Sounds like a starvation issue. I would really check that pilot jet, sounds like it may still be partially plugged. Another thought, check the float level, and the vent lines for obstructions. Another thing to check is the boots, are they cracked? I had one similar and with the hood open, upon throttling it, the boots would actually separate from the reed cage and flutter a little.(another make of sled, but similar circumstances)

Jim - I'm almost sure that you're a 2-stroke genius :) I raised the needle to the 3rd slot (middle) and now it doesn't bog down. I just tore it up around the yard and need to try it out on a longer run but its looking better.

Skutr,

when you clean the carbs make sure you blow out all the jets and all of the passages both ways with compressed air, to make sure that any foriegn objects are removed, spraying passages with carb cleaner isnt good enough, always finish with air throught the passages, eventhough it seems better by raising the needle, you still might have a blockage.
