96 MXZ shock

I have the skid out of my 96 MXZ 583 and wanted to know the travel of the rear shock.

Mine has a little more than 2 inches, there is lots of rod left but wont go in any further.

About 17" fully extended and just less that 15" compressed. It doesnt seem like there needs to be much more than that.

Thanks
RD.

That sled has a sc-10 skidframe which has 10 inches of travel and is one way back to front coupled. Not sure about shock travel, but the shock could very well need replacing after all these years and use.Check it all out as far as bushing and such also the welds on the front arm these have been known to break.

btw a shock rod should compress all the way in and return fairly quickly on its own when released. If it doesn't do this your shock has issues.

Yes it is, internal floating piston with a nitrogen charge.I think those are not rebuildable so if its bad you'll have to get another one.A rebuildable one would be better for sure, I think some of the newer mx-z shocks were.

The shock is toast.Your shock has lost oil (likely a chipped shaft) and now after you compress it 2" your rod assembly is hitting the floating piston. That's why it stops. It is not a rebuildable, so find a rebuildable one and have it rebuilt or a new one. Any used non-rebuildable shocks at that age are worthless.
