97/98 XC 600 triple flooding

I recently mistakenly volunteered to address what I thought would be nothing more than a simple carburetor cleaning on a 1997/1998 Polaris XC 600 triple (I know most XC's were 2 cylinders but this is a triple). Upon thoroughly cleaning each carb it started like it was new. I let it sit over night and it filled up the crank case again. Then I decided to re-build the fuel pump thinking that the diaphragms were the source of the leaking. Unfortunately this wasn't the case either. The only thing that I can think of that would be causing this, is that a float or floats are not floating up and stopping the fuel once the bowls are full of fuel. If it's not the floats does anybody have an idea what else may be causing this? Thanks a ton in advance for any help or advise you have.

needle and seats

Thanks rpX7, they were first thing I scoped out and they all appeared to be working perfectly. Everything looked and worked like it was new. If the needle and seat are the problem would the sled run perfectly? The only thing I didn't check was the how the floats slid up in down in the bowl. The carbs have a float on each side of the bowl and they're hung independent of each other.

I had a 97 XC600 and I replaced the needle and seats about every other year. It would flood out quite a bit. I would replace them. Did you shake the float to make it is still good? Good Luck.

gassed

if you turn the gas off at night it would probly work just fine , but check floats that they move smothily

Have a sled I've been doing exactly that for years. Gas on before ride, gas off after, never floods, runs like a champ.

tgun,

Did you have the 3 cylinder XC 600? As far as the floats went, I didn't pay to much attention to them. They seamed to move good and they didn't appear to have any fuel leaking out of them.

By the sounds of things, my next step is to replace the seats and needles. Thanks a ton tgun & rp7x.

This is a know issue in that vintage Polaris sleds. Just replace the needles and seats, and if you can, get the viton (SP?) tipped needles.

xcr440, tgun & rp7x,

The fuel shut off was my first suggestion, unfortunately the person that owns this sled is about as mechanically inclined as Zsa Zsa Gabore and about the same age. He literally drives it out to his fish house and back. He's owned it since new and it's only showing about 740 miles. I think the track still has the nubs on it.

You may just have to adjust the floats. With float bowl off and holding carb upside down make sure the float arrms are slightly pointing upward. Attach a piece of fuel line to the carb (still upside down) and blow in fuel line. As you are blowing in line slowly raise the float arms up until needle "seats". At that point you shouldn't be able to blow through the line anymore. If air does leak by the needle and seat....replace. If the arms are not pointed slightly up they will not fully seat the needle.

That definitely sounds like advise from a seasoned veteran. Thanks a ton!

KKB-
My 97 was a triple. 98 they went to twins. Great sled minus the carb issue. So where is Buck Hole MN?

Edit: Got thinking what I wrote....need carb right side up while blowing into tube and lifting the arms. oops:)

leave the gas on for a couple of days

Find the 3 plugs on the lower crankcase under the exhaust y pipe. Pull the plugs. If gas flows out......you have bad needles and seats

fix for flooding sled

I had the same problem. If you have the flatslide carbs you may have to replace the O-rings in the float assembly. You remove the 2 screws holding the float assmebly in the carb and pull it out if it comes out easy the O-rings are the problem. replace the O rings and this will stop. I have some extra O-rings left from when I did mine if you are interested in them.
