98 FormulaZ overheating (or something)

I replaced both pistons in my wifes Formula 583 last year after she melted one down (6k+ miles). After some troubles with the cooling system and getting it burped, it ran good for a while. At the end of the season it just died on the trail and wouldn't start. We went out last week and put a new temperature sensor on it as the gauge wasn't working (and it still doesn't work), and ran it around the yard a bit and it died out after the second lap. It felt very hot for only running two or three minutes, but started up again after about 10 minutes of sitting. Any ideas? Is it overheating? Maybe a fuel flow issue? Compression is good on both sides, about 105-110 range.

Where is the thermostat on these? I didn't even realize they had one. I do know that even with the new temp sensor the temp gauge still doesn't work.

If there is one it is where the water hose goes into the head but on the microfish for that year sled it doesn't show a thermo, only a temp gauge. Are you sure you got it burped good? If I am correct the heat exchangers are on the running board. Make sure the back part of them get warm within a couple minutes of running. If they don't but it is warm up towards the front then you got air in the system still. Also does it look like the water is moving in the res. tank? If not then might have a bad water pump. If all looks good there take a look at the plugs and see if they look the same color, drop the bowls and clean em and try again.

Could be just your gauge showing you that reading. I have three different compression gauges and they all show different numbers. Like 10 lbs. different between my cheapest one and my snap on. (my snap on and sears are within 1 lbs so I assume those are good) biggest thing is no more then 10% difference between two cylinders.

Hopefully it is the waterpump impeller, and not the gear on the oil pump shaft that runs through the motor. Those can strip the teeth off, the water pump doent turn, AND the oil pump doesnt turn!

This sounds like it could also be your coil. These electrical components will sometimes show symptoms once warm. You can easily check this by checking for spark immediately after the engine dies. If this is the case, it's a pretty cheap fix. Good luck.

OK, I pulled out the thermostat (there was one) and ran the sled without it. The rear of the coils get good and hot as the engine heats up. I but the thermo in hot water and it did open, so I assume it's good and put it back in. The hose running from the thermo to the cooling fins doesn't seem to heat up very much, it starts getting hot right by the engine and then slowly moves back. It's almost like fluid isn't warming it but the heat of the engine is travelling down it slowly. There is fluid moving into the resivour in a good stream. The heat guage (with the new sensor) still doesn't move, but it still seems to get real hot pretty quick. I haven't run it until it died again, but I'll go check the compression again to make sure it is good while it's hot.

Are there any filters inside the carbs? I remember my brother in law had an issue with the filters inside the fule intake fitting on the carb being clogged and when it got hot and he hit the gas it would die out and run like crap for a while, and it was because those filters were clogged. I don't see another filter on it anywhere (though I will be adding one soon).

Thanks for all your help.

Not sure how many miles you put on it after the rebuild, but I would verify that you don't have the coolant hoses reversed. I made this mistake during a skidoo rebuild and it would overheat. On my sled the hoses were of similar length so it's an easy mixup.
