From the Daily Mining Gazette:

To the editor:
Our son Reino, now 5 years old, has been battling stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma for the last 16 months. When he was in radiation he was visited by the Make a Wish volunteers. His wish was to come stay in a cabin in Michigan so he could learn to ski at Mont Ripley, to go snow tubing, play in the snow and ride a snowmobile.
Because the cancer had spread from his throat to his lungs and arms and spine, he was too fragile last winter to participate in outdoor activities so we reluctantly waited. We weren’t sure if we waited if he would be able to get his wish. Many people tried to convince him to choose a different wish, but he was steadfast in wanting to come here and to learn to ski at Mont Ripley. He would not change his mind.
Reino has an amazing medical team, and they have managed to stop the progression of this disease and to eliminate the primary tumor and reduce some of the others. He is currently stabilized and has had time for his bones to strengthen up since radiation ended last winter. His doctor told us to come and make memories.
The Make a Wish Eastern NC has so many kids awaiting wish fulfillment that they couldn’t grant his wish this year. That didn’t stop us from being able to make this Christmas wish come true for him.
The Copper Country has contributed significantly to making these memories. We have been blessed with the support of Don and Donna Jarman of D’s Base Camp, who have contributed the cabin for us to stay in. Kevin McClellan and ski instructors Jennifer, Cole and Brian at Mont Ripley have been working with all four of our children to ensure they have some skill and loads of fun on the slopes there. And today Jed Wuebben and Ben Erickson at Dollar Bay Sports offered the use of snowmobiles for a couple of days. Family, friends, coworkers, teachers and students also provided financial support.
Our family is so thankful for the love and caretaking we have received here in the Copper Country. We just wanted to be able to say how much we appreciate your generous spirit and for making this Christmas very special, not only for Reino, but for our entire family. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A great story in contrast to the thread surrounding the Demo Ride at Pat's. Maybe there's hope for us after all. Prayers for Reino, his family and all the volunteers.

Brings tears to my eyes, some are tears of joy & some are of sadness. My heart goes out to the family, I am so glad he is able to fulfill his wish. I am so proud to be a part of a community that really does care, that truly is what defines a yooper. Thank you John for sharing that.-Mezz
