A Perfect Ice Fishing Finish

Every spring I try to time my last ice fishing outing for late March or early April when the ice conditions are still good, the weather is much warmer, and you pretty much have the lake to yourself. This year worked out perfect. Temps were low 40’s, sunny to light overcast day, the lake was like riding on a pool table, and I never saw another human being.

It gave me a chance to try out my sled upgrades for ice fishing: I finally found an auger rack that I really liked and I also decided to build an actual storage box that bolts to the rack. I’ll probably paint it this summer.

I set up at my favorite spring spot and it was a good thing I left my extension on the auger. Even though this is a channel where the ice is typically thinner, I measured it at 43”. It will still be a while before it melts.

Fishing was solid, a nice limit of Walleyes and a couple of real porkers. Both were very fat and presumably very pregnant. Even if they were legal, I’d never keep a fish this size, let them go make some more little Walleyes.

Fishing aside, I’m not sure which appeals to me more this time of year, the sense of isolation or the sheer beauty of the lake. I think this image captures both.

Skiroule what would you consider to be a normal amount of ice this time of year. I would think 43" would be more typical end of February. Very nice pictures as usual

In my experience, this is not normal at all. I would expect around 15 - 18" for this spot at this time of year. Last year was a low ice year and conditions had deteriorated to the point where it wasn't even safe to get there after the end of March. I guess the relentless cold this winter was an exceptional ice maker.

Nice pics, good to see healthy walleyes! Our ice here in Manitowish is between 12”-18” right now. We can’t seem to shake the cold nights and snowcover. Might happen this coming week with warmer temperatures and some rain.

thats lots of ice our farm pond and small lakes around here are open for maybe two weeks
The shoreline warms first, if not the ice stays intact around the lake and does not melt quickly. Today was 50 and good sun, tomorrow 60, rain for 3 days, ice should start to weaken soon. It will be late April first ice out this year. I’ll keep you posted.

Very nice! that had to be fun on that jig pole! nice catch!
Yeah, it had a pretty good bend and I had to crank my drag up some to gain any ground. I use fairly heavy braided so I don't worry too much about breaking a line unless it's a bite-off. I have become a big fan of the Fenwick ice fishing rods, super-sensitive tip but strong enough to handle a good sized fish.

Basically the same pattern up here. A lot of the shoreline on the Canadian side of the lake is rock rubble or bedrock so on sunny days it seems to absorb quite a bit of heat from the sun. A few sunny days and the shoreline melt should be on but open water will definitely be late this year.
