AC 600 oil consumption problem...

Sled- 2000 AC zl600 efi, I have been burning A LOT of oil last summer and was going to wait for summer to fix, well sleds been up north and it hasnt worked out, but ill have it this weekend.

OK I usually have to refill my oil tank after a full day of riding 150-200 miles usually, sometime less dont remember exactly, but i can smell it in exhuast and I missfire if i let off gas and try to get back on it.

It seems to me after looking at the linkages and comparing them to pics, that it linked up backwards somehow. Do you think the shop who rebuilt it for the old owner put it together wrong? Or is the pump just going bad?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do your lines " line up ? ( arm & body ) . Burning alot of oil in a cat is normal ( IMO ) they have always been fat . I get 1 tank to 160 -170 miles ( I think ) in a 07 F6 . Maybe 140 miles before the light comes on. If the oil pump fails they are supposed to fail " full open ". I'm not sure about older sleds. I don't think that's to unusual for a Cat. ( 150-200 miles on a res ) And if that was the case you would be using a full res in 100 to 110 miles. That's what my POO 600 just did.

I had a 99 ZL600 EFI. Was good on oil but that misfire may have to do with the the 2 tss washers on the throttle lever.

Check the throttle cable for a rub thru on the steering post maybe be causing ur back fire also as stated earlier line up the line's on the oil pump arm and body check cable for slack

1)Loosen the adj nuts & Back off the lines a little to start. (counter clockwise ) 2) run a 1 step hotter plug, if you run a 9 which is a cold plug run an 8 . 3) Change oils .... just some thoughts , if your going to go down this road you have to be paying attention . You must check your carb boots for cracks, check your new oil consumption usage I don't know if there is such a thing as a lean spot for Cats, but on really cold days you might not want to keep the throttle in a steady midrange position for long distances. If there is a lean spot you will surely find it. As far as oil goes.... way back when there were primilary mineral oils and some synthetics I used to get ProdumaX from Canada, made for High Tech specialty lubricants. Nowadays...I prefer Sea & Snow, i think it's about time to get that thread going this year ( LOL ) I also ran " 8's " in my T Cat for years. That thing was " pig - FAT " almost like AC was afraid to have it grenade under warranty. I love posting this pic on Doo Talk from time to time, it's sure to encite hatred..... Oh yea and 1 more thing, as far as the backfire goes.... just pull up like " Uncle Buck " in the movie......

What oil are you running? If it is a full synthetic you will notice that this machine will burn a lot more oil with out adjusting the pump. The low temp pour rate that the synthetics say is an advantage is just marketing BS. This machine was designed to run on dino piss oil, the oil pump will pretty much pump tar and still lube the engine adequately. There are no exhaust valves to gum up so why run the expensive oil?

I went down this road after AC stopped selling the extreme oil and switched to APV. With the APV the sled just used more oil and fouled plugs more often. Then tried Amzoil/Snakeoil (I'm Going to get crap for that one from the rubes) the problem only got worse. Going back to the standard 50:1 injection oil solved this issue. Switching to Sea & Snow just saves even more money.
