I've hear the AGM are better as they can ahndle more abuse and are immune from feezing. The charging voltage is also the same as standard batteries. Personally, I use the standard flooded batteries due to the cost. I also don't mind "tending" to them. In fact, for a couple of years I ran with a dead battery and just used the pull start. But I'm cheap.

Get an Enersys Odyssey

I have had many of the AGM (Optima) for my vehicles..
They are good batteries.. although, I never found them to "provide for me" in a situation over the standard lead acid (Interstate, etc)

The down fall of the Optima's, is if they fall below 10 volts, there is a good chance is done.
I have a sports car I store every winter. And a couple years I left it connected with a little trickle charger.. mistake.. it fell down to 8 volts.. and I couldn't get it back.
I tried it one year disconnected.. the cold pulled it down to 9 volts. (average to high internal resistance)
I have bought 2 optimas.. but I bet I have installed 5 of them. (free warranty trade in as it was under 2 years) I also had an electrical problem in my Blazer (ignition) sometimes it would just die.. so I would crank it over and sometimes it would start, sometimes it wouldn't. When it didn't.. I brought the battery down to 9-10 volts.. Dead. They are Poor at taking a Deep Discharge and recovering.

I have since bought 2 Odysseys. They are pretty expensive. They offer everything that Optima does.. but they are MUCH better They are made for long term Storage and can take many deep discharges and recharge back to full life. A lot of power in a smaller battery. I bought one for my T660 (PC545)... I NEED it to start (4 stroke - no cord to pull) The battery I bought was an inch shorter length and inch shorter in height (1.5 lbs lighter) I got it for $100 online. I figured I would pay at least $70 for a std replacement. I have used it 2 years (2 summer storages and 2 cold winters) I did 2 weekends last year were average starting temps were -15 F NO PROBlem. After storage.. just start it.. no trickle charge.. nothing.. it maintains it voltage level.

I then went and bought one for my sports car. (PC925) I used it the last 2 summers and stored it last winter (Disconnected - 5 months) Reconnected it.. Fire up like I had it running a day ago. OH, and it is 4 lbs lighter than the standard battery. 3 inches shorter in length, 1" shorter in height.. It says it start V-8 engines (my car is a bigger 4 cyl.)
I have cranked my amplified stereo with engine off for 5-10 minutes leave it sit.. plenty of reserve. I was sceptical on these batteries.. they are much smaller and claim more power than reg. sized.. but they work. You do pay for them though. The PC925 I bought I think was $140..
They have Brass Terminals.. Not LEAD..(poor conductor).. they are just built well. The Army uses them.
Check the out.. website here http://www.odysseybattery.com/

I use the AGM , I have 3 and they take a substancial beating in my jet ski's. 1 is 3 seasons old. the others are 2 and 1. I have to replace a sled battery this year and will go to a AGM. I have tried everything , rubber mats, constant trickle charging with the " regular " batteries and never had much luck with them. I have 2 deka's ( seamates ) and an extreme magna power. They are worth the $95 to me.I believe a " true gel " are very pricy the last I looked at them.

batteries

I've had good luck with the Odyssey as well but couldn't justify the cost for the last replacement for the motorcycle. Get an AGM AND buy a smart charger like the Battery Tender, not just a regular trickle charger. The Battery Tender Jr can be purchased for under 30 bucks.
