Just wanted to give an update on how things are shaping up as this area was one of the big winners of last week’s storm.
Fortunately, the club (Algoma) I am associated with was able to get out right away last Tuesday night after the storm and begin packing things down. The tractor and drag went and did our entire section of Ahnapee Trail. While the Tucker (without drag) went and ran most of the non-railroad grade trails to pack snow and break up some of the wet areas. I don’t know if it was the fact that the snow was a bit denser or just luck, but despite the 40+ MPH winds very few true bare spots or large drifted areas were encountered overall. The Tucker was able to get through just about everything (aside from detours around a few small swamps), and since has been out with the drag and repacked and thoroughly broke up the wet areas on the side trails. Additionally, the Ahnapee has been repacked multiple times as well.
For those familiar with the area, the trail through the Black Ash (two mile stretch through a muck swamp that has wet areas in even the driest/coldest of years) is all but lost for the season. Aside from that, Algoma’s trails are ready to be opened. There are still a couple possible wet streams, some icy spots that were initially wet, and thin plowed fields, but overall things are pretty good. However, given the forecast for the next couple days, along with other clubs in the county still waiting for their trails to freeze, trails won’t open up at this point.
So here’s hoping the next couple days turn out to be closer to John’s forecast than the others and that trails don’t lose too much snow coverage! If that does turn out to be the case, look for trails in Kewaunee County to open sometime next week after the cold front goes through. Until then, thanks everyone for the patience.
