Almost Killed by an Idiot

Last Friday morning (approx 11:30 am) I was heading east on the Mountain Bay trail in Shawano County following a yellow ski-doo 4-stroke. For some reason his buddy turned off on a side trail and he kept going.

I was doing about 65 - 70 mph when out of the corner of my eye I see a black ski-doo 4-stroke inches from my left running board and closing fast. I got to about "wha" in *** when we kissed skis (see attached pic it's hard to see but you can make out yellow paint on the ski loop).

Remember the guy who turned off on a side trail - that was him trying to catch his buddy who left him behind.

Not only did this guy have more sled than brains he didn't even bother looking back. In fact, they took off as fast as their sleds could go. I don't care if someone wants to be a throttle rocket but to put someone else in danger and then running away is just cowardly.

I slowed down and thanked the Lord for sending His Angels to safely carry me through the incident. Bottom line is that I'm ok & there was no damage to my sled BUT somewhere there is a black ski-doo 4-stroke driven by someone who is willing to take unnecessary risks with other peoples lives and doesn't have the courage to stop, stand up and admit that he's an a-sh--e.

I know you can't fix stupid, but please be careful and ride like your wife is watching and your childern are behind you. God Bless.

Not that you wish anybody any harm, but those are the kind of people you hope to see a bit down the trail stuck in pickers about 100 yards off the trail cuz' they were going to fast and missed a corner. You than drive by casually giving him the single finger friendly wave (be sure to slow down enough to lift your helmet up so they can see your immense smile), and continue on your merry way. Some people are just born stupid!!

Ever notice it's the "Idiots" that drive to fast, and the "Morons" that drive to slow.

Skutr, there are thousands more out there just like that guy. (scary thought).

:) I sure have and you're absolutely right and that's why I keep reminding myself that I'm not the only idiot on the trail. Or moron or any other adjective used by others to describe my riding style. :)

I have rode behind riders that even have mirrors on their sled for a few miles going from side to side so that you don't pass them, this is not right. I watch behind when I am leading a group, if I see another group catching up I will pull the group over and let the next group pass in a safe area. I don't think that it is right to hold another group up. Everyone rides at different paces what seems fast to you may be slow to another

well as my screen name says snowbullet yup Im usually the person thats riding close about 2 sleds behind you !!Im the guie who Roars by you in a open field when im able to pass when its safe . My sled will stop a beating heart at 10 grand as i pass you and you will need to check your shorts for stains . I WAS that blurr you got passed by on the trail . I never indangered anyone and i always waited and abided by the trail rules that we all run by . this year i turned tail and ran SLOW for once in my life Must be getting old !! 30-45 maybe 50 mph all day we put on 1500 miles so far this year and what an enjoyable time ive had !! I got to see old cars , deer, birds, D.W.I ers and sleds in groups that should have been parked because no headlights Vintage ones . Me and my bud got behind a few of you out there that have side murriors and take up the whole trail going 20 mph even though its wide enough for 3 sleds they decided not to let you pass for the next 5 or 10 miles .Ive been forced off the trail by a few that were comming at you at 80 mph and never slowed down . There are Idiots out there They think they are GOD to the snowmobiling season . And For God Sake Keep your dam hands on the handel bars at night WE CAN NOT SEE YOUR HAND SIGNALS when comming at you !!

Pretty sure Skutr wasn't so cheesed off about the speed of the other rider as he was about said rider's method of passing him. Running board to running board and touching skis is unsafe and stupid, no matter what the speed.

Sorry, Skutr, if I'm wrong in my assessment.

Russholio - you're right. I don't care if someone wants to be a throttle rocket, but don't put me or anyone else in danger doing it.

In fact - I LOVE speed and the rush that comes with going faster than my guardian angel can fly. But I love my family and I'm sure everyone else loves theirs and that slows me down so I can make it home.

"Warning Signs"

If you keep an eye out you can usually recognize a member of the PTR, they are starting to put warning signs on themselves and their sleds… we noticed a group this weekend up in the Keweenaw at a lunch stop, they all had racing #’s on their sleds, a couple of them had "cute” outfits that matched there “awesome” sleds, we watched as they saddled up and “attempted” (some of those “front heavy” sleds don’t handle very well on concrete either, lol) to drive down the street back to the trail (pipes make them run faster don’t ya know), the best part was watching the “leaders” sled just randomly flip on its side while trying to turn back onto the trail…priceless.

We used to ride side by side bumping skis at 100! We called it the nerve test! For people not used to it, it can become a bit hair raising to say the least.

Don't like it but I have clicked skis with on coming sled blurr in twistys. I stopped he/she didn't. It happens & unnerving so now you can log it up to experience & hope it does not happen again. Stay alert .....Stuff happens out there so try to always stay to right to avoid contact from oncoming & passing sleds.

Have to admit (even for all the bashing I do) came into a corner a little hot several weeks ago and met a sled riding through the middle of the turn (still on his side though) had to tap the binders pretty hard, enough to start my *** end around which I quickly calculated took up “my full half of the turn,” no contact but it must have been awfully close.
Moral to the story; I slowed down after that…
