Who has been to both? Which would you suggest and why? Talking about a trip for NEXT season and I have only been to Cooke City.
Alpine, WY. vs. Cooke City, MT.

A local I know from the Jackson Hole has been to both. He speaks VERY highly about the Alpine (and a bit south of there Afton) area. Some of this countries best riding if you know where to go. Millions of acres of riding...Bridger national forest

Wouldn't bother with Alpine. There is no snow there!
Actually, my crew REALLY loves Alpine for the terrain. Never been to Cook yet, so can't tell you about differences. Alpine has every thing from mild to wild and everything in between. Lots of open meadow and some serious climbs if you want them. Its pretty easy to navigate. The only down side is the drive. 26 plus from here in good weather! You can do it in less with a heavy foot, but that hurts the ol' wallet.

Never been to Alpine. I do like Cooke for the steep. I like Island Park for the conveniences and proximity of things. Togwotee is still my favorite because of the massive area it entails. Snowies I don't care for from what I saw of it. Each place offers a different twist, but if you want to go big go to Cooke, not for the meek. Take avy classes and know how your gear and beacon works before you do any out west trips.

Think of Alpine this way, a road or in winter a trail runs from Alpine 80 miles south to a parking lot or sled unload area 7 miles south of Smoot Wy. In that 80 miles of road you can find years of riding. I have been to the south end and sledded 15 miles up before getting off trail and to my amazement the riding I was shown. As a local riding there I've been there 25 times and that is a drop in the bucket thing. Now start this event in Alpine going south and you don't have and can't carry enough gas for this. It truly is a grand place to ride. Do the Firecatguy thing and stay at Togwotee and ride a day or two. Than go south and try that. There is lodging in Alpine and along the highway south, but limited. The drive from Togwotee to Alpine is 2.0 hrs in winter... I have to say the Alpine/ greys river area south to south end does have limited tree riding. So its best on bluebird days and awesome it is....... You have to get over this stuff of driving. Either you drive to great riding or keep going to the other places and complaining...pick one.... I don't care if your great place is northern Minnesota or UP or Wyo. or Florida, go ride and enjoy it. Having been a guide at Togwotee for a while I'm partial to it and all the different things it offers. I am in awe of the south end. The steeps are many and massive and have to be 10 times as many considering the size of the area. Its a matter of making a decision.......

With fuel at 4 plus a gallon and limited budgets and limited vacation days to work with, you had better believe drive time is going to play a significant role in Midwesterner's decision making process! "just go ride and quit your bitchin", is much easier said than done.

Not sure what you mean other than going north out of town towards Lulu and such or going east towards top of the world. Both have much to offer.

Happy Easter to all.....and I want to clear something up.....I didn't mean to imply that bitchn' was bad...seems these days that's what we get to do. We have little control over things and to bitch and complain helps relieve stress. My goal was to say we love riding, go riding...kiss the wife....kick the dog.....swear at the sled.....be mad at summer...all the stuff, but enjoy and go riding. Or, dream about it till next season....

Anyone wanting to ride the Alpine area and wanting to ride from their door should check out this place. It is owned by a guy I have become friends with since riding out west. Looks like a great deal and he is a great guy. Rob will also be available as a guide.

I have been to both areas and I would go to Cooke if I could only go riding for a few days. I would go to Alpine if I had more time to kill. Cooke is a small area whereas the Alpine/Afton area is huge and the terrain is just as sick if not more than Cooke! However, It is not as easy to find as it is in Cooke. We talked to some locals and they pointed us in the right direction. You can ride right from Alpine and Afton if you want to. But a local told us to trailer to this little parking area near Bedford WY and follow the goat trail to the top. That area was unbelieveable and we even ran into the KLIM folks and their turbo sleds up there.
