Can anyone help with information about an amtrak train that leaves sioux st.marie that you can load sleds on and take trip into canada? Does it even exist? How far into canada can you go? Is it possible to back pack back to sioux st. Marie? Has anyone done it and any recommendations?

Do an advanced search for the snow train and a thread should come up that could be helpful. It's been discussed at length on that thread. Others will help here too, but I've never done it, yet!

Sioux Ste. Marie?

Would ya believe Sault Ste. Marie? (That's from the French: "Les Saults de Sainte Marie." "Sainte Marie" (Saint Mary) being the name of the river, and "Saults" referring to the rapids that make the locks necessary for nav

And of course, the Snow train is operated by the Canadian Algoma Central Railway, not Amtrak!)

We did this trip 15 or so years ago and really enjoyed it. We took the train from Sault Ste. Marie to Hearst and then rode back to the Soo. It's a beautiful ride on a 50's vintage train. It will stop anywhere on the route.

Any more questions, pm me.

Not this year. trail is closed from Searchmont to Wawa again. Halfway Haven is closed. You can do the Soo to Chaplau and then over to Missinabe and up. The main hotel in Hornpayne is also closed. So A lot more work to do than in the past. Take the train up ride the loops and train back this year for best use of time. Myself, I would skip the train thing all together since you are already driving and head straight to Wawa and ride from there north. Key is do your homework before you leave. Have good sleds, your group is as good as your weakest link. Canada is not the bar hopping scene as in the UP. towns are far and few between. Speed limits are enforced in towns especially to the south such as Elliot lake, and St. Joseph Island and all points in between. not so much north. Never pass a gas station without topping off. Canada is great, the people are great! just not much of them.

thanks escessive force
any estimate on how many miles that was and how many days? Is there cel phone service up there? Any thing we should consider?

The route we took was around 1540 miles for the round trip. We easily did this trip in a week. Cel service can be spotty at times, but never was an issue for us.I would say the biggest thing to consider is your gas stops,as sometimes the fuel stops in the UP open/close down frequently.

Sorry to hear about all the closings. When did the Halfway Haven close? We spent a couple days there back then and rode a lot of logging roads aroound there.

The economy, peoples fear and passport requirements at border and the recent flooding in Wawa all hurt them. Luc the major groomer said he had enough. Many factors including ttail permit cost, The speed limit issue, etc. Also play a part. I still go have been doing so for about 15 years. I get the area to myself as seen in my profile pics.

Did the snowtrain once and that is enough to get off ur bucket list.PR is right never past gas ,have good sleds and have real good cold weather gear for riding in -35 .I have a son I ride with that has medical issues so I have a satellite phone for our remote sled and atv rides in Canada and out west but you can rent one and spread the cost with the group. And again PR is right you have the area to yourself.
