Antifreeze coming out of overflow- help?

Have a 2002 Polaris Edge X 700. Antifreeze coming out of overflow. Was told it was either a water pump or o ring/head gasket. Any way to tell what is the problem?

So, it's either over-heating, or perhaps the coolant bottle cap is just old and the spring is worn and releasing too soon? Might want to try a new cap first. Cheap item to check....

Well, I'm assuming your "overflow" is the tube coming out of the top of the coolant bottle.... not sure what else would be refered to as that...

Maybe you just need a new thermostat????

Radiator shops have a pump that can pressurize your cooling system when the sled is not running. You may be able to tell something from this. If it won't hold pressure you obviously have a leak somewhere - maybe a head gasket. You could take out the spark plugs and perhaps see or hear coolant trespassing into the cylinder. Also, with this pump you could tell exactly at what pressure your cap is letting go at. It may be as simple as a new cap. They can get old and weak. If it holds pressure then you have to suspect the water pump. Good luck.

Well I have a few questions that would help narrow it down.

Have you checked your spark plugs for signs of burning coolant?

How does the sled run? Smooth and steady or rough and erratic

Where is the thermostat in relation to the overflow tank? Could it be stuck shut and the engine coolant is expanding to the point of coming out the tank?

Was this its first run of the season and it worked last year? Did it work yesterday and now it is doing this?...

couple questions for you, did you have any work done lately? if so try this, sounds like you might have an air buble in the cooliing system , run the front of the sled up a snow bank so the engine is higher than the rear heat exchanger, and let it idle with the rad cap off. make sure the sled is not hot when you start thi. run for about 15 mins. also check to see if the cooland is flowing, if not bad water pump

did you also check the obvious? lol
my 02 600 shoots back some coolant out of the overflow hose if i try to top it off right up to the line
it runs with about 1/8-1/4" less coolant than the cold full line
did you just top yours off?

i also made my coolant line loop up, so the excess coolant will run back into the bottle later

I wasn't using it at the time of leaking coolant. This is what my brother said happened- he just got done riding for a while(50 miles or so) then let his daughter drive it for a bit- I emagine at a pretty slow speed. Then after turned off for about 5 min he started it up and loaded it on the trailer when he noticed the coolant flowing out of the overflow. To his knowledge, the temp light did not come on. When he got to my house about 3 hrs later- I topped off the coolant(about 1/4-1/2 qt) let it warm up and ran it hard for about 20 min. turned it off- no coolant coming out anywhere. The reservoir went down a little but not much. Doesnt smell like its burning coolant. Havn't check the plugs or tops of pistons yet. Motor has never had any work done and I am the original owner.

I don't think you have an issue got a little hot at very slow speed & then shut down & put on trailer. Should have been reved up & taken thru some deep snow would have cooled down. But nice that they told you so you could refill. Better to know than not know.

What would this look like?

2002 edge x 700

I also have this exact sled. The cap is a known problem. Also you should check your water pump belt to make sure it didn't break. I believe there bwas a tsb on that. The o ring on the head would be a rare instance unless you have modified your engine.
