WILLIAMSBURG -- You may have tried their Wild Bill's Root Beer or even one of their cola flavored drinks at a local restaurant. Northwoods Soda is a family owned business based out Grand Traverse County.

There's more to Northwoods Soda than just their root beer. It's also their orange cream soda and cherry sodas among other products like coffee syrups and even juices.

"We make everything from bag in a box, five to one fountain syrup. We do bar mixes, bar sour, margarita mixes. We do bottled sodas," says Northwoods Soda director of operations, David Fosdick.

It's not just the quantity of products that Fosdick and his dad Bill pride their company on though. It's the quality. In fact, the family run business has been focusing on it for 30 years.

"My dad was a salesman for a guy who actually started the business, starting the business making soft drinks down in the Kalamazoo area. Then he learned how to make soft drinks, sold part of the business and came up north and that's been 30 years we've been making soft drinks in Traverse City," says Fosdick.

The company has more than 100 individual flavors, some of which you can find at local restaurants.

"We do the Northwoods brand where we delivery personally. We do that from Elberta Thompsonville area all the way to Petoskey....We're offering a unique product at a more competitive price really than the national brands. So, people are looking for that. For a way to both do local and save money and we allow them to do both," says Fosdick.

Plus, when it comes to local, Fosdick says it all comes to down to making sure their customers approve. That's why Northwoods is continuing to grow and improve their bottom line.

"At the end of the day if it doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter if it's local or not. It has to taste good. It has to compete with our competition...the number one brands in the world, Coke and Pepsi are number one and two. We really have to do quality and it has to taste right," says Fosdick.

For this father and son team, it all goes back to the basics.

"It's always comforting to know that my dad started from nothing and it's kind of, we'll do it all over again if it comes to that," says Fosdick.

Northwoods Soda is located on Broomhead Road in Williamsburg. They're currently working on new labels for their sodas.

I also saw an add for this soda. Rootbeer is awesome! I can still remember going to work at stroh brewery in the summer and passing the vernors gingerale plant. Giant oak barrels gave it a distinct taste. I still like glass bottles but I stopped opening them with my teeth a few years ago.

Was that in Detroit, perhaps the one with the showplace glass wall at 4501 Woodward Avenue (from the late 1950s to 1985), or the earlier one, also on Woodward Avenue, that occupied an entire city block one block from the Detroit River?

Yes sir, thats the one back in 1978-79. I was just at the drinking age and would sit under the stroh brewery logo on top of the roof at lunch and down a 6-pack of stroh signature with my work buds. Great place and time.

I need some Wild Bill's soda for my rum!
Oh ye of little taste!

Root beer is NOT to be trifled with!

Uncork the top off'n one, and pour it straight into the center of the glass. If it is a distinguished brew, there should be a 2 inch head on it. Then whiff it by your nostrils, and take a long slow deep breath....your palate should be having a stroke about now...then put glass to lips and drink a good long chug. It should bite going down, but lay there smooth as silk.

Then take your right arm and wipe the foam away from right side of lips and do the same with your left. Ahh.....now THAT'S what root beer is all about.

Anyone messes with that process...shoot them....everyone on the jury would understand!
