I only ride in the Hayward/Cable area. The last couple years have been not very good riding during that time. We always make a trip up for New Years whether there is snow or not, and it's usually been not.

However, we also have had some of the best riding around that time. The only thing to really watch is if the lakes are frozen. The clubs stake them, so if you stay by the stakes, you should be fine.

We ride there every year but later on in Jan. REVman is correct when he says stay by the stakes. There are some little bays that always seem slushy. Also sometimes they plow rodes to fishhouses that you don't want to cross with any speed. It is a good area if there is snow. In recent years we have gone north from there across hwy 2. It seems there is usually more snow up there. Also not near as much traffic except on the corridor trail. Although we have never been there during Christmas the locals all say this is one of their biggest weekends. Hope it snows for you.

I have had some great times in this area. My friend lives in Drummen (don't know if that was spelled correctly)

We had a blast on the unplowed logging roads in the area.

If you can make to "The Other Bar" in I belive Iron River Wisconsin it is well worth the trip. Best shrimp filled bloodys on earth. The hot ham and cheese is also to die for.

Extreemly nice and friendly people. If there is snow the trails will be awsome they do a great job grooming.

Drummond - And I agree, they do a very good job of grooming up there if there is snow. Key ingredient obvioulsy......

I live in Hayward and that's about as early as we ever ride. Last year we rode before Christmas and had about 30" of snow and the lakes were froze. It rained the day after Christmas and pretty much screwed it. The New Year's time frame draws in a lot of traffic if there is ridable conditions - I'm retired and can ride most any time, I stay off the trails that holiday. If you need a condition report send me a message

Make sure you check out Garmisch Resort-makes you feel like you are in a German mountain lodge. We stayed there a couple of years ago.Great food and nice people.

I have ridden that area for years. Our cabin is northwest of Hayward about 60 miles. That is just about as early as you could possibly ride based upon the past few years. Good luck and have fun. The trails in that area are beautiful. I recommend traveling northwest (Gordon, Wascott, Solon Springs areas) on at least one of your day trips. The trails in that direction see literally about half the traffic as the Hayward and north areas.
