FISKARS axe/hatchett

I do not have the larger axe or maul but do have the smaller axe/hatchett. I assume from your post what you're really asking for is a review on the composite handle? If thats the case, the handle works great and I can't really ever see it (the unit...any of it handle or otherwise) ever needing to be replaced. I have had the hatchett for about five years and it gets regular use from camping to around the yard duties and splitting wood for the fire pit or smoking wood for the meat smoker. I thought when I bought it that maybe there would be some vibration due to the composite handle being hollow but have not noticed any of that. I would not hesitate buying the larger axe or maul but have not seen that available anywhere by us. My .02¢

Thanks. Yeah, I'm curious if the composite handle is unbreakable, as they claim. Also want to know if it splits as good as a regular 8 lb maul. They claim with the design of their axe head, that it will do the same work as a 8lb maul, even only having a 4 lb axe head. I have a bunch of white oak to split and don't want to spend 60 bucks on an axe and find out it won't do the job! I have probably spent more than that in maul handles already though. I usually go through 2 or 3 a season with miss hits on the wedge. Usually happens when I start to get tired-lol

Bought one two years ago, although I don't split as much wood as some I love the thing! Only sharpened it once and it seems to have more speed than a heavier one, I personally think it was worth the money! Heard alot of positive feedback online before I bought it too. Hope this helps!

my son left me his it is 28" and just under 6 total pounds it works well , i would like it heaveyer and a little longer, it will not hold up to a splitting wedge

I split with an eight pound maul for years. The Fiskars is so much lighter and the handle is relatively short so I was skeptical that it would perform as well. It does a surprisingly good job for how light it is. I do at least as well with the Fiskars as I could do with the big maul but without having to swing the added weight. I suspect most of its benefit comes from the extremely sharp blade but its shape and non-stick surface certainly help.

I wouldn't use it to drive a wedge though and you can't really chase it through a tough piece with a sledge hammer. The non-stick surface works well enough that the head just bounces out of a partial split.

I wouldn't worry too much about breaking the handle. It seems fairly "unbreakable" and, with the lightweight head, an over-strike isn't much of a problem. The handle is integrated into the head so if you were to break it, you'd have to replace the whole axe.

Do raise your work up off the ground. It takes a while to get used to the short handle and you don't want to test its performance on boot leather.

Well I got my Fiskers delivered today. I went with the 36" and all I can say is HOLY CRAP. This axe just flat out works!! I am splitting 48" rounds of white oak. I quarter them with the wedge first and then start working with the axe. I am getting through a round in half the time I was with my 8lb maul. Very impressed!
