(June 23) -- A magnitude-5.0 earthquake rattled the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Toronto early this afternoon, shaking office buildings, breaking windows and sending tremors as far as Flint, Mich.; Columbus, Ohio; and Albany, N.Y., according to reports.
Centered in Val-des-Bois, Quebec, the quake was initially reported as magnitude 5.5 but was downgraded to 5.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey. According to witnesses in eastern Canada and parts of the U.S., the ground rumbled for approximately 30 seconds.
Many office buildings in downtown Ottawa and Toronto were evacuated because of the tremors. Ottawa's emergency services later told the Ottawa Citizen that calls had flooded in as the city turned "haywire."
"Our house starting swaying and rumbling like on a washboard, there was a load roaring sound and I could hear the building creaking," Ottawa resident Richard Austen told the Citizen. "I ran out of the house after I realized it didn't feel like it was going to stop ... some things fell off the walls and cabinets."
There were no early reports of injuries or significant damage, the Toronto National Post reported.
