I am looking for info on motocross racing. My 13 year old is showing some interest. I haven't found much useful info with on-line searches. Can someone point me in the right direction? Any help is much appreciated!

Also I am curious, If you were to incorporate a family "race team", could you wright off the purchase of a piece of land to practice on?

Not to bring you down, but we had friends who had a 12 yr. old son get killed doing that. Needless to say they aren't in it anymore. They had it all too. Land, bikes, trailer. He was very good at it too. Safety was always #1 with them. You never thought Blair Morgan would ever get hurt either. I guess you never know.

The best advice is to head to the track or down to your local dirtbike friendly store. There usually is someone who can help get him started, especially if your also a newbie to the sport. Contact your local AMA District they too can help with who, what, when and where. Definately outfit him with safety gear, plan for the crash not the ride. Last if you cant find a good riding buddy or a buddy that has a parent willing to help, there is always motocross schools to teach him proper technique in your area. I know there at least 3-4 guys doing them in District 16 and hey at 35 Im headin to Missouri in October for an off-road riding school. Cant ever learn too much of the right technique. Have fun its a great sport!

Thanks guys. I kinda figured a trip to the track would prob be the best place to start. Sorry to hear about your friends jakester. Unfortunately, no matter how much you prepare, there is always an inherent risk with any kind of motor sport.

Jakester, sorry to here about your friends, but I agree with snoluver1 that all motorsports are dangerous. I hillclimb, ride some haresramble and enduros, and trail ride(2-4 times a week) and know the dangers of it everytime I throw a leg over it that I could be hurt or worse but it's what I love to do so I have to deal with the risks involved with doing it.

Snoluver1 good luck and I hope it all works out for you and your son, as mentioned before the track in Byron is a great track and will probly be the best place for info. They usualy have practice on Saturdays and racing on Sundays.
Good luck, be safe & have fun

Thanks for the offer goneaway. I can't make it up there this weekend, but I plan on heading to my local track in Byron IL in the next couple weeks to do some mingling. Just picked him up a CR 80 to play around on and see how he does. The thing is pretty sick. Pulled the front wheel up trough 3 gears with me on it. I just need to make sure he doesn't scare the crap out of himself, and go running for the hills!

Its a blast! I raced 125 class for about 5 years back in late 80s early 90s. Yeah i broke my collar bone, dislocated my shoulder, got ran over and bruised a kidney but as others have said it can happen doing anything! I dont know about your luck but i could try and be safe and just sit at my kitchen table and stare outside but the kitchen light would probably come loose and drop on my head and crack my skull!! Sure there are "freak" accidents of deaths and being paralized but its kinda like swimming in shark waters..statisticly you have a better chance of getting in a plane crash. Get the right safety gear and be sure the kid wears it! When I dislocate my shoulder I "forgot" my chest protector/shoulder pads at home and went out and raced anyways and of course my luck went south. Even if you dont want to race its a kick *** way to have fun if you have a place to ride. Bikes in the summer and sleds in the winter...doesnt get any better than that! Dan

snoluver1, my son is 14 and has been racing now for 3 years. Rides an 85 Honda and we all enjoy it. Even my wife. We just went to a track and started learning the ropes. Find a set of rules off AMA and read or if it is an outlaw track try to get a copy of theirs. One suggestion that I would like to make is don’t skimp on the safety equipment. My son did an end over flip and was ok and finished the race because he didn’t want a DNF for the class. Make new friends and ask questions. Everyone I have talked to have been always helpful when we had questions. Have fun and good luck.

He isn't my kid but he is my nephew, who is 17, crashed 2 Sundays ago as he was racing and the 2 riders in front of him crashed together and when he came over the jump my nephew had nowhere to go and hit them head on and ended up lacerating his liver!!! The laceration was so bad that it almost split his liver into 2 pieces. He spent 4 days in ICU and then another 3 in Intermediate care. He's home now but that was very scary for my entire family. Now before anyone yells about this incident I would like to say that he was wearing all of the required safety gear (Helmet, chest protector, riding boots) and just got caught up in someone else's mess. I'd also like to add that just because you have all of the proper safety gear on you might still get hurt. Be safe out there guys.

I read through a couple of the replies about people getting hurt on mx bikes and ya there dangerous but I dont think there is any greater risk vs. reward in motorsports. There's an adrenaline rush you never get used to seeing the fast line through the corner and pulling the double in front of the other guy. Let alone its a 12 month a year season if you make a trip to the Sand Box. I'll say it again outfit him with safety gear and make him wear it and it will be second nature, he wont ride without it. Not like me at 36 trying to figure out how a leatt brace goes on let alone keep it on more than a couple minutes....
