Anyone Take Simvastatin?

I recently had a Calcium Scoring Screening mainly because I have been experiencing some shortnes of breath and "heaviness" in my chest mainly when lying down. Total score came back at 306 with almost all in the left anterior. My cholesterol is only slightly elevated so my doc said the problem is mainly genetic. He gave me a prescription for Simvastatin. After researching and reading a lot of users comments about the side effects, I don't know if I want to start taking it. I also realize that people usually only post on the net when their experience is a negative one.

I am 33, been on it for 3 years....cholestrol runs high in my family. I have diabetes for 25 years so even more important that I keep my cholestrol in check. No problems, no side effects for me. AND, my check ups have been great!

I have been on it for 2 years. I was at 280 and dropped to 150 in 6 months. Its cheap, works and no side effects.

Been on it for 3-4 years dropped me down to between 160 & 130. I was on Lipitor before @ 4x the cost & feel better on Simvastatin. Go for it no side effects at all.

What do you attribute the weight loss too? By the way congratulations on losing 130 lbs that is awesome.
I have been taking Crestor for 8 or 9 years now with no side effects and it has kept my cholesterol in check.

Simvistatin

I have been taking it for almost two years now with NO side effects at all. Really has helped get my cholesterol down...high cholesterol runs in the family and in two years I went from normal to over 300...ouch, with no change in my diet, no weight gain, etc. Since I have been taking it I have returned to normal on my cholestreol (same diet) and actually my "good" cholesterol has increased as well which has made my doctor happy! I have been very satisfied with the results and, as I said before, NO side effects to speak of!!! And, yeah...I was on another one for the first six months that cost 10 times what Simvistatin cost and I didn't have nearly the results! I would definitely recommend this med (cheap and it works)...and I am not one to EVER recommend taking meds!!

Hope this is helpful!!

Simvastatin can kill your liver, so your physician should monitor your liver enzymes — with regular hepatic function panels (blood tests) while you're on this. Better watch that muscle soreness too, there is also a risk of developing myopathy when taking simvastatin!

I was on Zocor (before the Merck & Co. patent expired) and started throwing higher liver enzymes, so I had to get off it.

I am currently on Plavix, Lipitor, Zetia, Lisinopril, Carvedilol and Slo-Niacin (non-prescription, 2000mg/day - no flushing/'hot flashes'). So far the cholesterol & lipid panel numbers are lookin' good, ditto for the hepatic function panel!

My cardiologist still won't let me even think of a future hip replacement until after my next stress test. (No surgery while on Plavix and can't even briefly stop it for surgery!)

Was on Simvastitin then went to Lipitor, and now I'm on Crestor....been on it for a long time. Sim and Lipitor gave me a bit of an upset stomach during the night. No such problems with Crestor. I wish there was a generic for Crestor!

Thanks for all the input guys. The doctor did tell me I would have to get the liver checked in 6-8 weeks.

So if and when the numbers get down, do they ever take you off? I always dreaded the day when I have to start taking a pill every day for the rest of my life. Then again, he told me how they put a stent in....that didn't sound like much fun either.:)

Tried but my numbers went up. It's in my genes I guess. IMO..I'd rather take a pill than have then open me up.....any day.

Yes i'll agree stents wernt fun at all upsledder, Had 3 put in july 16th last year, Im also on lipitor, plavix, slo-niacin and norvasc, But 4 pills a day to stay healthy is part of the ageing factor ,And i guess the living on the edge eating factor for so many years caught up to me (Im 46 now) lost 80 pounds since july with 20 more to go to be at 175. My cholesterol is now 124 down from 316, Always heard how good i'd feel, Well im still waiting...lol,, Best of luck to you and your goal upsledder, And one thing to remember most of the tests are more painful than the pills, Oh yes and the bills.....lol

Are you kidding me?? Take the pill before you go to bed at night have the blood panel 1x a year for liver & everything else. Once they put hardware in ya 1 stent leads to another stent take the dang pill! Keep you body free of hardware as long as you can!! I also have a DNR once I'm gone that's it!! Quality not quanity if you can't have both! :)

How long was it from when you first had those symptoms until you had to have the by pass surgery?
