AOL Ranks Traverse City #8 Beach Town in America

AOL just ranked a Northern Michigan beach town as one of the top ten in the country.

Traverse City is now proudly posted as America's #8 beach town.

The beach itself is a major factor in the ranking. AOL even called Traverse City the "Malibu of Michigan." But they also judged the beach towns on other things they offer, like festivals and downtown shopping.

Traverse City holds its own on the list against coastal towns in places like California and Florida. In fact, we're the only Midwest city to make the cut.

9&10's Alex Jokich and photojournalist looked into why AOL chose Traverse City and have the story.

Great place to go. Love it there but I never thought of it as a "beach" town. Good for them tho!

I'm gunna get it for this one....but....

Last time I was up thataway for a spell, and walked the beaches in early October, I was carried away with the low water levels and the beaches that had tons of algae floating around at the water's edge. The motels and hotels along the strip heading to town had muddy-sandy flats standing for hundreds of yards out...not making them very attractive.

I did NOT get over by the big dunes area and MAYBE that was nicer.

It was once an outstanding resort area, not sure I would trade it for any of the beaches along the coast of the BIG lake though....course, you have to have cast-iron fortitude to jump in that water...but for now, it is clean.
